ORISE Position with the CDC Division of Reproductive Health, Emergency Preparedness and Response Team

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Division of Reproductive Health (https://www.cdc.gov/reproductivehealth/index.html), Field Support Branch is seeking interested candidates to fill a position on our Emergency Preparedness and Response Team (Reproductive Health in Emergency Preparedness and Response (cdc.gov)).  This opportunity is open to recent graduates, or anticipated December graduates, with a Doctoral or Master’s level degree who have experience in epidemiology, biostatistics, or maternal and child health. ASTDA Summer Fellowship Program for STI Research

The American Sexually Transmitted Diseases Association has a new summer research fellowship for junior scholars who are interested in STI research.

We encourage a broad range of research topics pertaining to STIs, including basic science, clinical investigation, program science, and educational scholarship

Eligible people are students enrolled in college, graduate, or professional school, and recent graduates who have completed a degree within the past three years

People who are chosen for the program will get $5,000, plus travel support to attend a conference to present their work, and their mentors will get $2,000 (mentors must be members of ASTDA at the time of application)

Research Analyst, HCA Healthcare

The Research Analyst will assist in translating clinical needs into analytic questions, design and conduct rigorous analyses of health related data, and translate analytic findings into actionable intelligence for HCA faculty and residents. This position serves as an expert resource in supporting data analytics for the HCA GME portfolio by performing a variety of activities related to data management, analysis, reporting, and visualization.

Job Summary and Qualifications
  • Constructing and manipulating large electronic claims datasets, knowledge in domain modeling, relational database design, programming language(s),SAS, data transfer methods, and electronic health record and health care claims standards and/or analytical techniques used in research programs.
  • Developing study designs and analytic solutions based on available data sources, business partner’s needs, and timelines;
  • Managing multiple projects related to a wide variety of business settings and clinical needs;
  • Collaborating with key internal and external stakeholders to gather and analyze needs and requirements;
  • Presenting data or analytic findings in a variety of formats (reports, PPT, graphs, figures and tables)
  • Develop and maintain a working knowledge of statistical principles and analysis considerations taken into account during planning of research.
  • Consult on and provide direct technical support for research projects of high complexity and often requiring solutions not previously used by the project team or work group.
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of terminologies and coding procedures used in research and the health care environment.
  • Contribute to the development of training, tools, and process documentation for both the department and for assigned projects.
  • Perform data analyst functions that generate knowledge via data mining, visualization, or other analytics. Serve as a resource to others performing this work. Lead the creation of best practices, resources, and tools that enable new analytical capabilities.
  • Ensure compliance to HCA data access policy and procedures.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Master’s Degree preferred from an accredited master’s degree program providing training in a research related field, statistics, informatics, or related field of study and a minimum of 5 years related experience.
  • Experience in health services research environment.
  • Experience with large health care data sets including, electronic health records, Medicare claims, or other health care claims data sets preferred.
  • SAS experience is strongly preferred. RDBMS SQL valued.

Health Communication Fellowship in Diabetes, Division of Diabetes Translation

  • Plan, apply, and evaluate various communication science and marketing techniques to achieve optimal program results and promote positive health outcomes 
  • Contribute to the preparation of written documents that reflect a thorough knowledge of complex public health issues and appropriate health communication, health promotion, and marketing intervention strategies

City Research Scientist I, NYC DOH

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYC DOHMH)’s Bureau of Hepatitis, HIV/AIDS, and Sexually Transmitted Infections (BHHS) oversees the City’s response to viral hepatitis, HIV/AIDS, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).  Across a range of programs and through extensive collaboration with other parts of NYC DOHMH and external stakeholders, BHHS leads testing initiatives; prevention, care, and treatment programming; epidemiology and surveillance; research and evaluation; training and technical assistance; community engagement; social marketing; policy advocacy; and racial equity and social justice initiatives. 

The team at BHHS’s HIV/AIDS Care and Treatment Program (CTP) is the Recipient of the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (RWHAP) Part A grant and consists of four units:

1) Administration
2) Program Planning
3) Quality Management & Technical Assistance
4) Research and Evaluation

The HIV/AIDS Care and Treatment Program seeks an Information Systems and Quality Analyst (Civil Service Title: City Research Scientist I) in the Research and Evaluation Unit to contribute to process and outcome evaluation and reporting for the Ryan White Part A (RWPA) program and assist on other projects as needed.  This opening offers a rare opportunity to join a stellar team of analysts and scientists in advancing health practices, policy and scientific advancement through the effective use and communication of scientific research data.

DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:

• Support the scientific research epidemiological data-driven quality management and standards of federal and state-compliant HIV/AIDS services provider reporting.

• Support local public health responses to emergencies such as COVID-19 and any other emergency health responses.

• Participate in core unit activities, including cleaning, managing, analyzing and displaying process and outcomes epidemiological data using analytic software packages (SAS).

• Contribute to scientific research data systems specifications, documentation, testing, epidemiological data collection tools, and/or user support/technical assistance.

• Help to integrate scientific research data from different systems as needed to ensure epidemiological data quality and completeness.

• Contribute to scientific research reports, presentations and papers related to evaluation of the RWPA program for public dissemination.
 

Minimum Qual Requirements

1.  For Assignment Level I (only physical, biological and environmental sciences and public health) A master’s degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological or environmental science or in public health.
To be appointed to Assignment Level II and above, candidates must have:
1. A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or
2. A master’s degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” or “2” above. However, all candidates must have at least a master’s degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience described in “2” above. Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can be substituted for the experience required in “1” and “2” above.

Appointments to this position are subject to a minimum probationary period of one year.
 

Preferred Skills

• Strong analytical, organizational and communication skills.

• Professional working knowledge of SAS (programming and analysis), as well as Access, Excel and other MS Office software.

• Ability to work effectively with a diverse staff of scientist, IT specialists, scientists, planners, clinicians, program managers and service providers within the NYC DOHMH and at external agencies, as well as client/consumers who participate in community planning and research review processes.

Provide health research and writing of associated scientific products to support scientific activities in the Office on Smoking and Health (OSH), Associate Director of Science (ADS) office
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct literature reviews related to particular scientific topics.
  • Develop analytical plans to be approved by the ADS staff or project lead.
  • Complete a concept proposal and once approved will present it before the OSH Science Committee.
  • Conduct the data analysis, present and discuss findings, and assist with drafting a manuscript or report.
  • Enter scientific documents in eClearance for review as directed by the OSH project lead.
  • Assist with reviewing paperwork and related documentation for OSH Office of Management and Budget (OMB)/Paperwork Reduction Act (PRA) applications.
  • Make recommendations as to changes that are necessitated and will work with the associated branch or program as directed by the OSH project lead to ensure necessary edits and updates are made.
  • Assist in maintaining a share file repository of completed OSH (PRA)/(OMB) packages.
  • Work with the ADS office on developing and compiling information to serve as technical assistance for reviewing Data Management Plans on relevant OSH funded projects.
  • Develop internal technical assistance documents for programs to use to review Data Management Plans that are submitted by awardees.

Description

The mission of CDC’s Division of Reproductive Health (DRH) is to promote optimal reproductive and infant health and quality of life by influencing public policy, health care practice, community practices, and individual behaviors through scientific and programmatic expertise, leadership, and support. The mission of DRH’s Maternal Mortality Prevention Team (MMPT) is to lead national approaches to the systematic collection, analysis, and use of data to end maternal health disparities, eliminate preventable maternal mortality, and improve the health of all women. MMPT leads two major surveillance approaches to understanding and preventing pregnancy-related deaths through state and local Maternal Mortality Review Committees (MMRCs) and the Pregnancy Mortality Surveillance System (PMSS). MMPT supports MMRCs across the country to identify, abstract, and review pregnancy-related deaths and identify prevention opportunities, through the Enhancing Reviews and Surveillance to Eliminate Maternal Mortality (ERASE MM) program.

This fellowship provides opportunities to conduct data analyses that improve understanding of characteristics of, and prevention opportunities for, addressing pregnancy-related deaths; support ongoing development and modernization of the Maternal Mortality Review Information Application (MMRIA) used by MMRCs for data collection, review, and analysis; and build state epidemiologic capacity for using maternal mortality review data for prevention.

Examples of learning opportunities

·         Train in quantitative and qualitative analyses of maternal mortality data to improve understanding of characteristics of and prevention opportunities for addressing pregnancy-related deaths

·         Draft and revise manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals and government reports with feedback from staff scientists

·         Present results of analyses of maternal mortality data to internal and external audiences, including scientific conferences

·         Support ongoing surveillance database development and modernization

·         Develop epidemiology and data analysis-related resources for MMRC data analysts including data analysis guides and standardized SAS programs for data cleaning and analysis

·         Assist with providing epidemiology and data analysis-related technical assistance to MMRCs on a variety of topics including identification of pregnancy-associated deaths and analysis of MMRIA data

·         Assist with coordination of monthly MMRC data analyst office hours, as well as workgroups of MMRC data analysts on specific topics of interest (e.g., pregnancy-associated death identification, data visualization)

Qualifications and Necessary Skills

·         Master’s degree from an accredited college or university with a background in epidemiology, biostatistics, or closely related disciplines is required. Candidates who are currently pursuing a doctoral degree in a relevant discipline and are interested in completing a part-time fellowship will be considered.

·         Strong proficiency in using SAS for data management and analyses

·         Excellent analytic skills including experience in data management, data cleaning, and conducting epidemiologic analyses for large datasets

·         Experience with or interest in analyses that address health equity and social determinants of health

·         Strong background in epidemiology methods

·         Highly detail oriented, works well within a diverse team, demonstrates a high degree of initiative and flexibility adapt to shifting priorities, able to communicate effectively in a positive and professional manner, and able to prioritize activities when under tight deadlines. 

·         Excellent written and verbal communication skills with experience preparing, writing, and editing complex documents such as detailed reports and peer-reviewed articles.

·         Sound judgment and maturity exemplified by consistent professionalism in dealing with individuals at all levels both internally and externally.

Desired Start Date:  January 3, 2022

Length of Appointment:  The current appointment runs through May 31st 2022, with the possibility of extension for an additional 12-months beginning June 1, 2022

This fellowship is administered through the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) program.
