Multiple Tenure Track Positions in Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Indiana University

The Indiana University School of Public Health‐Bloomington (SPH‐B) invites applications for multiple tenure-track faculty position in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. This is an open-rank search and applicants at all levels (assistant, associate, or full professors) are welcome. SPH-B seeks individuals who will contribute scientific excellence through rigorous research and teaching in epidemiological and/or biostatistical methods, public health policy and practice, and through community engagement to build the evidence base to responsibly promote health in the populations they serve. These 10‐month appointments would ideally start August 1, 2022, although an earlier or later start date is negotiable. Applications received by February 1, 2022, will receive full consideration, and applications will be accepted until the positions are filled.

Responsibilities:

Tenure track faculty in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics are expected substantially contribute to the overall academic excellence of the department by fostering and maintaining a robust research portfolio; pursuing and managing extramural research funding and support; teaching and mentoring students at the undergraduate and/or graduate level as designated by the department chairperson; and actively participating in the overall research and teaching mission of the department, school, and university. Areas of special interest include, but are not limited to: computational methods to address complex problems in infectious disease, nutrition, obesity, and related health outcomes; social, structural, and economic influences of HIV risk; statistical genetics and genetic epidemiology, genome wide and epigenome-related association studies, and modeling high-dimensional data; research in addiction and physical activity, and cancer and cardiovascular epidemiology; comparative effectiveness, causal inference, and rigor and reproducibility. All research areas related to health will be considered, with preference given to research that is collaborative, synergistic with other SPH-B and Indiana University faculty and aligns with major funding priorities. These positions are located on the campus of Indiana University, Bloomington (IUB) in Bloomington, Indiana, and successful candidates are expected to work on the IUB campus to allow full engagement with the department, school, campus, and community.

Qualifications:

Candidates must hold a doctoral degree in epidemiology, biostatistics or a closely related field from an accredited educational institution. A firm commitment to the role of diversity in all aspects of research, education and service is essential. Candidates must have teaching experience at the graduate or professional level. Good interpersonal skills, effective communication skills, and the ability to work cooperatively and congenially within a diverse faculty are required. Leadership skills and vision for enhancing the academic components of an interdisciplinary department are essential. Candidates for associate and full professor positions must also demonstrate a record of scholarly achievement appropriate for a senior career level, including extramurally funded research as a corresponding principal investigator, current funding or strong potential to secure external funding, and experience leading sizeable research initiatives.

Unique Entity ID Webinar, Jan 12

On January 12, 2022, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) is offering a repeat of the popular webinar “All about the Unique Entity ID (SAM) for the Recipient Community”. The General Services Administration’s (GSA) Integrated Award Environment (IAE) will present about the new System for Award Management (SAM) Unique Entity ID. The session is targeted towards the recipient community and will walk through everything a recipient of federal awards needs to know in preparation for the transition, including a demo of how to request a new Unique Entity ID (SAM). Global Health Technical Training Fellowship

The pilot program supports CDC’s efforts to expand the diversity of degrees and backgrounds represented within its workforce. Part-time Epidemiology Instructor, Southern CT State University Online EMPH Program

We are looking for a part-time instructor to teach Introduction to Epidemiology for our new Executive MPH Program in management and leadership at Southern Connecticut State University. The course will be taught entirely online, synchronously on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 7:40 – 8:55 pm. Epidemiologist, LA County Department of Public Health

Supervisory Statistician, DC Health

This position is located in the Department of Health (DC Health), Center for Policy, Planning and Evaluation (CPPE), State Center for Health Statistics (SCHS), Data Management and Analysis Division (DMAD). The Data Management and Analysis Division is responsible for the collection, statistical analyses, maintenance, and dissemination of the vital records data (i.e., births, deaths, fetal deaths, marriages and divorces, and abortions) generated by the Vital Records Division and other population health and surveillance data, including but not limited to Healthy People, Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS), and Occupational Health. The DMAD creates and maintains statistical databases based on the birth and death records and other health information reported by area hospitals, clinics, and public health programs. These statistical databases are further linked with other databases to create statistical profiles of the District’s population. In addition, the DMAD provides assistance to other DC Health administrations in linking state agency databases. Further, the DMAD conducts research and research publications on issues such as infant mortality, abortions, birth, and death rates, perinatal health, work-related injuries, and illnesses.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The incumbent of this position serves as a Supervisory Statistician and is responsible for executing a full range of direct supervisory functions over the DMAD’s staff. Develops and supervises the application of relevant statistical databases for decision making for the Department, including statistical support in the development, implementation, surveillance and evaluation of health and medical care programs of the Department. Develops statistical data collection methods necessary to meet the increasing emphasis placed on program evaluation and health planning. Incumbent is also responsible for the operation of statistical data systems to measure the effectiveness of a large number and variety of public health programs.

Qualifications

Degree that included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc. Credit toward meeting statistical course requirements should be given for courses in which 50 percent of the course content appears to be statistical methods, e.g., courses that included studies in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements or business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data, such as tabulating methods or electronic data processing.

Combination of education and experience– courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance.

Individuals must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the Grade 14 level. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped the individual with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position such as leadership or direction of professional work in the management of public health programs, planning and coordinating, developing and implementing strategic plans; or performing similar management or senior level public health related work.

It is strongly preferred that the incumbent have at least two years Supervisory experience.

ASTDA Summer Fellowship Program for STI Research

The American Sexually Transmitted Diseases Association has a new summer research fellowship for junior scholars who are interested in STI research.

We encourage a broad range of research topics pertaining to STIs, including basic science, clinical investigation, program science, and educational scholarship

Eligible people are students enrolled in college, graduate, or professional school, and recent graduates who have completed a degree within the past three years

People who are chosen for the program will get $5,000, plus travel support to attend a conference to present their work, and their mentors will get $2,000 (mentors must be members of ASTDA at the time of application)
