Epidemiologist, LA County Department of Public Health

Supervisory Statistician, DC Health

This position is located in the Department of Health (DC Health), Center for Policy, Planning and Evaluation (CPPE), State Center for Health Statistics (SCHS), Data Management and Analysis Division (DMAD). The Data Management and Analysis Division is responsible for the collection, statistical analyses, maintenance, and dissemination of the vital records data (i.e., births, deaths, fetal deaths, marriages and divorces, and abortions) generated by the Vital Records Division and other population health and surveillance data, including but not limited to Healthy People, Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS), and Occupational Health. The DMAD creates and maintains statistical databases based on the birth and death records and other health information reported by area hospitals, clinics, and public health programs. These statistical databases are further linked with other databases to create statistical profiles of the District’s population. In addition, the DMAD provides assistance to other DC Health administrations in linking state agency databases. Further, the DMAD conducts research and research publications on issues such as infant mortality, abortions, birth, and death rates, perinatal health, work-related injuries, and illnesses.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The incumbent of this position serves as a Supervisory Statistician and is responsible for executing a full range of direct supervisory functions over the DMAD’s staff. Develops and supervises the application of relevant statistical databases for decision making for the Department, including statistical support in the development, implementation, surveillance and evaluation of health and medical care programs of the Department. Develops statistical data collection methods necessary to meet the increasing emphasis placed on program evaluation and health planning. Incumbent is also responsible for the operation of statistical data systems to measure the effectiveness of a large number and variety of public health programs.

Qualifications

Degree that included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc. Credit toward meeting statistical course requirements should be given for courses in which 50 percent of the course content appears to be statistical methods, e.g., courses that included studies in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements or business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data, such as tabulating methods or electronic data processing.

Combination of education and experience– courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance.

Individuals must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the Grade 14 level. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped the individual with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position such as leadership or direction of professional work in the management of public health programs, planning and coordinating, developing and implementing strategic plans; or performing similar management or senior level public health related work.

It is strongly preferred that the incumbent have at least two years Supervisory experience.

ASTDA Summer Fellowship Program for STI Research

The American Sexually Transmitted Diseases Association has a new summer research fellowship for junior scholars who are interested in STI research.

We encourage a broad range of research topics pertaining to STIs, including basic science, clinical investigation, program science, and educational scholarship

Eligible people are students enrolled in college, graduate, or professional school, and recent graduates who have completed a degree within the past three years

People who are chosen for the program will get $5,000, plus travel support to attend a conference to present their work, and their mentors will get $2,000 (mentors must be members of ASTDA at the time of application)

Research Analyst, HCA Healthcare

The Research Analyst will assist in translating clinical needs into analytic questions, design and conduct rigorous analyses of health related data, and translate analytic findings into actionable intelligence for HCA faculty and residents. This position serves as an expert resource in supporting data analytics for the HCA GME portfolio by performing a variety of activities related to data management, analysis, reporting, and visualization.

Job Summary and Qualifications
  • Constructing and manipulating large electronic claims datasets, knowledge in domain modeling, relational database design, programming language(s),SAS, data transfer methods, and electronic health record and health care claims standards and/or analytical techniques used in research programs.
  • Developing study designs and analytic solutions based on available data sources, business partner’s needs, and timelines;
  • Managing multiple projects related to a wide variety of business settings and clinical needs;
  • Collaborating with key internal and external stakeholders to gather and analyze needs and requirements;
  • Presenting data or analytic findings in a variety of formats (reports, PPT, graphs, figures and tables)
  • Develop and maintain a working knowledge of statistical principles and analysis considerations taken into account during planning of research.
  • Consult on and provide direct technical support for research projects of high complexity and often requiring solutions not previously used by the project team or work group.
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of terminologies and coding procedures used in research and the health care environment.
  • Contribute to the development of training, tools, and process documentation for both the department and for assigned projects.
  • Perform data analyst functions that generate knowledge via data mining, visualization, or other analytics. Serve as a resource to others performing this work. Lead the creation of best practices, resources, and tools that enable new analytical capabilities.
  • Ensure compliance to HCA data access policy and procedures.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Master’s Degree preferred from an accredited master’s degree program providing training in a research related field, statistics, informatics, or related field of study and a minimum of 5 years related experience.
  • Experience in health services research environment.
  • Experience with large health care data sets including, electronic health records, Medicare claims, or other health care claims data sets preferred.
  • SAS experience is strongly preferred. RDBMS SQL valued.

Health Communication Fellowship in Diabetes, Division of Diabetes Translation

The selected participant will have the opportunity to interact closely with public health program professionals in the Division of Diabetes Translation, and will be involved in the following activities:  

  • Participate in developing, implementing, and learning how to manage national communication and marketing programs, projects, and initiatives for various audiences 
  • Plan, apply, and evaluate various communication science and marketing techniques to achieve optimal program results and promote positive health outcomes 
  • Contribute to the preparation of written documents that reflect a thorough knowledge of complex public health issues and appropriate health communication, health promotion, and marketing intervention strategies 
  • Participate in researching and developing messages and materials that are valid and consistent with program objectives and are based on communication and marketing theory and principles as well as audience research (including concept, message, and Web-usability testing) 
  • Collect data and contribute to the development of products such as fact sheets, program briefings, questions and answers, program summaries, Web pages, and program-in-briefs 
  • Collaborate with Center/Division communication offices and others within the Office of the Director to provide support on communication efforts, e.g., campaigns, observance days 
  • Collaborate with web team members to ensure information is successfully disseminated across the web sites providing clear oral and/or written instructions on this topic, as appropriate 
  • Collaborate with the web team in providing technical support for digital and social media evaluation

Environmental Consultant, Florida Department of Health

City Research Scientist I, NYC DOH

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYC DOHMH)’s Bureau of Hepatitis, HIV/AIDS, and Sexually Transmitted Infections (BHHS) oversees the City’s response to viral hepatitis, HIV/AIDS, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).  Across a range of programs and through extensive collaboration with other parts of NYC DOHMH and external stakeholders, BHHS leads testing initiatives; prevention, care, and treatment programming; epidemiology and surveillance; research and evaluation; training and technical assistance; community engagement; social marketing; policy advocacy; and racial equity and social justice initiatives. 

The team at BHHS’s HIV/AIDS Care and Treatment Program (CTP) is the Recipient of the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (RWHAP) Part A grant and consists of four units:

1) Administration
2) Program Planning
3) Quality Management & Technical Assistance
4) Research and Evaluation

The HIV/AIDS Care and Treatment Program seeks an Information Systems and Quality Analyst (Civil Service Title: City Research Scientist I) in the Research and Evaluation Unit to contribute to process and outcome evaluation and reporting for the Ryan White Part A (RWPA) program and assist on other projects as needed.  This opening offers a rare opportunity to join a stellar team of analysts and scientists in advancing health practices, policy and scientific advancement through the effective use and communication of scientific research data.

DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:

• Support the scientific research epidemiological data-driven quality management and standards of federal and state-compliant HIV/AIDS services provider reporting.

• Support local public health responses to emergencies such as COVID-19 and any other emergency health responses.

• Participate in core unit activities, including cleaning, managing, analyzing and displaying process and outcomes epidemiological data using analytic software packages (SAS).

• Contribute to scientific research data systems specifications, documentation, testing, epidemiological data collection tools, and/or user support/technical assistance.

• Help to integrate scientific research data from different systems as needed to ensure epidemiological data quality and completeness.

• Contribute to scientific research reports, presentations and papers related to evaluation of the RWPA program for public dissemination.
 

Minimum Qual Requirements

1.  For Assignment Level I (only physical, biological and environmental sciences and public health) A master’s degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological or environmental science or in public health.
To be appointed to Assignment Level II and above, candidates must have:
1. A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or
2. A master’s degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” or “2” above. However, all candidates must have at least a master’s degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience described in “2” above. Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can be substituted for the experience required in “1” and “2” above.

Probationary Period
Appointments to this position are subject to a minimum probationary period of one year.
 

Preferred Skills

• Strong analytical, organizational and communication skills.

• Professional working knowledge of SAS (programming and analysis), as well as Access, Excel and other MS Office software.

• An appreciation for scientific research epidemiological data quality and program quality management.

• Ability to work effectively with a diverse staff of scientist, IT specialists, scientists, planners, clinicians, program managers and service providers within the NYC DOHMH and at external agencies, as well as client/consumers who participate in community planning and research review processes.

• Capacity to maintain multiple projects and function effectively both independently and as part of a team.
