If you are planning on working with hazardous chemicals and animals there are a few requirements that need to be met. You must be listed on an EHSO Chemical Safety Approval Letter and your PI must have IACUC approval to use hazardous chemicals in animals.

To be listed on an EHSO approval letter, your PI will need to update his/her existing Chemicals in Animals form in BioRAFT or submit a new Chemicals in Animals form. See our new document for more details on submitting through BioRAFT. Chemicals in Animals Form and EHSO Approval Process

After the PI submits the form, the form status will change to “Awaiting EHS Review.” EHSO will then review the form submission and notify you and the PI if additional training is required, and how to enroll.

For higher level chemicals, such as tamoxifen and BrdU, there is an initial, classroom training taught in person at DAR* on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month (apart from holidays or university closures.) This course is required for the lab to receive hazard signage necessary for higher level chemical hazard work.

Every 3 years, personnel that use higher hazard chemicals will need to complete an online refresher training. EHSO will notify you when training is due.

After you complete training, EHSO will issue an approval letter that listed approved personnel.

Remember!

• No chemical work in animals should be performed by lab members who are not listed on the EHSO approval letter.
• Chemical work in animals by personnel that are not listed in the EHSO approval letter will result in the termination of the key card access for the lab group until EHSO determines an appropriate course of corrective action.
• The classroom training sessions are limited in size. As a courtesy to fellow researchers, do not enroll until you are notified by EHSO. This will help ensure that lab personnel can complete this training in a timely manner.
