Sarah Higinbotham has been teaching literature in prison for almost two years now. For her efforts in outreach, Higinbotham, an English doctoral candidate and instructor, was awarded Outstanding Community Impact award from GSU. Now, University Housing is funding a grant for the fall semester where they will pay for books and supplies for the prisoners in exchange for her participation with 15 service learning students who live in the GSU housing. The GSU students will be learning about mass incarceration, and will have active participation with a marginalized population through peer review of each other’s essays, as well as through two field trips to the prison to engage in a joint, GSU and prison student workshop.
