Dr. Walter C. Rucker, Professor of History, was recently featured in the virtual discussion “Observing Juneteenth: The Conversation Continues,” with Dr. Carol E. Henderson, Vice Provost for Diversity and Inclusion, Emory’s Chief Diversity Officer, and Adviser to the President. Held on June 25, 2020, the event was sponsored by the Emory Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion as well as the Office of Spiritual and Religious Life. In the conversation Rucker and Henderson discuss Juneteenth through the lens of slavery and slave resistance as well as freedom and liberation. Rucker’s works include The River Flows On: Black Resistance, Culture, and Identity Formation in Early America (LSU Press, 2005) and Gold Coast Diasporas: Identity, Culture, and Power (Indiana University Press, 2015).
