Assistant Professor Chris Suh has won the W. Turrentine Jackson (Article) Prize of the Pacific Coast Branch, American Historical Association for an article he published in Pacific Historical Review last year. Titled “‘America’s Gunpowder Women’: Pearl S. Buck and the Struggle for American Feminism, 1937-1941,” the piece examines debates between first and second wave feminism and the influence of racialized thinking on U.S. conceptions of women’s progress. The prize is sponsored by the University of California Press.

Lipstadt Receives Exemplary Teacher Award
Congratulations to Dr. Deborah Lipstadt on receiving Emory’s 2020 Exemplary Teacher Award (formerly known as the Scholar/Teacher Award) for transformational teaching and public scholarship. Lipstadt is Associated Faculty in the History Department and Dorot Professor of Modern Jewish and Holocaust Studies in the Department of Religion and The Tam Institute for Jewish Studies. The award is one of the top honors given to faculty at Emory.
Michael A. History Major Zaynab Said Receives Root-Tilden-Kern Public Interest Scholarship at NYU School of Law
History major Zaynab Said graduated in December with a BA in History with a concentration in law, economics, and human rights, and Arabic. This fall Zaynab will attend the NYU School of Law as a Root-Tilden-Kern Public Interest Scholar. History Major Kendall Chan (20C) Wins Robert T. Jones, Jr. Scholarship
Senior Kendall Chan, a history and political science double major, has won a Robert T. Jones, Jr. scholarship at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. Suh Recognized with Hardman Award for Excellence in Service to the Emory Community
Congratulations to Dr. Chris Suh, Assistant Professor, on receiving the 2020 Laura Jones Hardman Award for Excellence in Service to the Emory Community at the Emory Crystal Apple Awards ceremony earlier this semester. The Crystal Apple Awards honor faculty members who go above and beyond in their search for knowledge and involvement in the Emory community. The awards are sponsored by the Residence Hall Association. Each year, students are asked to nominate their professors based on select criteria.
Eckert Wins Emory Williams Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award
Congratulations to Dr. Astrid M. Eckert, Associate Professor of History, on being awarded the Emory Williams Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award. The award is presented annually to faculty members in each of the four undergraduate schools in recognition of a record of excellence in undergraduate teaching. The award was established by Emory Williams, a 1932 Emory College alumnus and long-time trustee. Eckert is one of only six faculty on campus to receive the award this year. History Major Ellie Coe Receives 2020 ECLC Excellence in Language Studies Award in Russian
Congratulations to history major Ellie Coe, the recipient of the 2020 ECLC Excellence in Language Studies Award in Russian. Last year, Coe received a Clio Prize for Best Research Paper in a Freshman Seminar for her work, “A Mythic Spaceman: The Cultural Influence of Yuri Gagarin.” Below, the Emory College Language Center offers details on Coe’s work and the award:
Coe is a second-year studying History and Russian & East European Studies. She first began learning Russian in high school under the tutelage of a private teacher, and immediately fell in love with the language and culture. Through her Russian language classes at Emory, Ellie has discovered a passion for Russian poetry of the early 20th century; her favorite Russian writer is Vladimir Mayakovsky. Specializing in Soviet history, Ellie is interested in studying the Soviet space program, which launched the first man into space in 1961. In October 2019, she was able to put her Russian skills to use when she interviewed five cosmonauts at NASA’s Johnson Space Center for an independent research project. Ellie is grateful to her professors Dr. Elena Glazov-Corrigan, Dr. Juliette Stapanian-Apkarian, and Dr. Matthew Payne for encouraging her to follow her passion!
