Description

This full-time contractual position will support and enhance public health surveillance and detection capacities of the Office of Preparedness and Response by participating in bio-surveillance and other drug-overdose monitoring and analysis activities.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • reviewing reports of drug-related overdose activity for evidence of unusual cases or clusters and ensuring analysis of unusual cases or clusters is tracked and completed
  • analyzing drug-related syndromic surveillance information and disseminating results and summaries through annual or ad-hoc reports
  • developing or enhancing reporting protocols, procedures, surveillance activities information dissemination or analytic methods
  • ensuring the overall quality of the data, the adherence to CDC case definitions and rapid detection of clusters or trends
  • developing and providing drug overdose bio-surveillance presentations/trainings
  • participating in other surveillance and OPR activities including on-call and syndromic surveillance rotations as well as participating in drills, exercises, trainings, real world public health responses

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Education:   A Master’s degree in the field of Public Health from an accredited college or university with a minimum of three graduate courses in Epidemiology and one graduate course in Biostatistics.

Preferred Qualifications

The desired candidate should possess the following:

  • experience/education in syndromic surveillance and/or working with morbidity or mortality data sets or systems
  • knowledge of and/or experience with epidemiologic methods and analysis and summarizing data analysis into reports and presentations
  • delivering presentations of data to a variety of audiences
  • familiarity with and interest in working to address the Opioid Epidemic
  • experience in public health preparedness
  • experience using SAS and/or STATA statistical analysis software

Speakers will describe the impact of COVID-19 on rural and urban communities, challenges to confronting the virus and inequities in who is impacted within and between these settings. Given the differences in population density, access to health care and population demographics a focus on rural and urban communities will help highlight the dimensions of inequity exacerbated by COVID-19.

Immunizations Surveillance Epidemiologist, Florida DPH

Position Description:

The Bureau of Epidemiology, Florida Department of Health is seeking a full-time surveillance epidemiologist with an emphasis on immunizations surveillance.

Position specific responsibilities include:

  • Assist in the design, implementation, management, and analysis of immunizations surveys.
  • Lead integration of the National Immunizations Surveys and Florida SHOTS (Florida’s immunization registry) for state level vaccination coverage assessment.
  • Coordinate surveillance activities statewide on immunizations status surveillance, including conducting statistical analysis of immunizations surveillance data to define and monitor immunizations rates and trends in immunization practices.
  • Coordinate activities related to the grant (ensure all grant deliverables are being met, do quarterly reports).
  • Assist county health departments in the design and evaluation of health initiatives aimed at improving immunizations rates.
  • Work with the Florida SHOTS Business Analyst to respond to data requests from partners and as directed by the Section Administrator.
  • Review existing data sources on immunization status and vaccination exemptions as well as look at trends over time for immunization status indicators and review existing reports on a regular basis. Identify and validate new data sources for immunization status and trends in immunization status.
  • Review policies, guidance documents, and data collection tools to see if we are making the right recommendations and collecting the right data in the right ways.
  • Review current interoperability functionality between Merlin (Florida’s reportable disease surveillance system) and Florida SHOTS to assess what additional updates need to be made. Ensure those updates are entered into the appropriate change management software, prioritized for release, and tested prior to release.
  • Update web content.

Qualifications:

Candidate must have excellent written and oral communication skills. The successful candidate will have strong data analysis and data visualization skills and a firm understanding of public health surveillance, syndromic surveillance and surveillance system evaluation methodologies. The candidate should have experience with analysis software such as SAS, SQL, Access and/or other analytical tools (R, SPSS) and experience with GIS. The candidate should have an MPH, MSPH, MS in epidemiology, or equivalent degree or an advanced degree in a health-related field (i.e., PhD in epidemiology, biostatistics, or other public-health field; an MD degree; or a DVM degree), including completion of at least three graduate level epidemiology courses and two graduate level biostatistics courses.

Organization Description:

This position is in the Bureau of Epidemiology, Florida Department of Health, State Health Office and is based in Tallahassee, Florida. The position works with the Immunization Section and Surveillance Section within the Bureau of Epidemiology. The Bureau of Epidemiology leads the Department of Health’s efforts to prevent infectious and chronic diseases through surveillance, case and outbreak investigation, training and information dissemination.

Frank H. Monteith Fellowship Program, Fulton-DeKalb Hospital Authority

Role Description

The Fulton-DeKalb Hospital Authority Fellowship Program bears the name of former Board of Trustees member, the late Frank H. Monteith. Mr. Monteith had an entrepreneurial spirit and started his own transportation company – the largest and oldest minority owned limousine service in the Southeast – which he owned and operated for 43 years. Mr. Monteith was a member of the Fulton-DeKalb Hospital Authority Board of Trustees for nine years and left a legacy of entrepreneurship and generosity. Graduate students will be afforded an opportunity to participate in a Fellowship program in honor of Mr. Monteith.

This program integrates academics with practical experience. It is an opportunity for a student to assist the organization with a project or initiative related directly or indirectly to the student’s academic work. It is designed to provide an opportunity for the student to gain knowledge and valuable work experience in the health arena, which incorporates many disciplines. Some of the fields that are potentially available for student fellowships include, but are not limited to public health, public policy, policy administration, marketing, public relations, finance, and sociology. The Fellowship Program provides opportunities to:

  • Develop professional work habits
  • Explore career objectives
  • Earn funds to support college education
  • Apply classroom learning to the work setting and earn academic credit (course or practicum credit)

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for The Fulton-DeKalb Hospital Authority’s Student Fellowship Program, a student:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the United States Of America;
  • Must be currently enrolled in an accredited college, university, or vocational-technical program in the United States. We require that our interns/fellows either attend school or be a resident in Fulton County or DeKalb County, Georgia;
  • Must be eligible to receive credit hours;
  • Must be a current full-time/part-time student, as defined by that school, in the semester or quarter in which he/she applies for the fellowship;
  • Must have a cumulative Grade Point Average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Any student in the United States meeting the above requirements may apply for fellowship, but preference will be given to those students who are attending a college, university or vocational/technical school in Georgia. If at any point in the fellowship program, the fellow ceases to be enrolled in school, he/she will no longer be eligible to participate. In that event, the fellow will immediately be terminated from the program.

Fellowship Details 

  • Duration: The fellowship shall be for a maximum of 10 weeks, a semester. Exact starting and ending dates and daily schedules will be arranged between the fellow and The FDHA.
  • Compensation: The FDHA will cover the cost of parking for fellows and other expenses incidental, travel (gas), to their work with The FDHA, as shall be approved in advance by The FDHA Chief Executive Officer or designee; no further compensation will be provided.
  • Scholarship: Fellows shall receive a three thousand dollar ($4,000) scholarship. Fellows must work at least 15 hours per week for the duration of the fellowship. Fellow must choose scholarship paid directly to school or course credit and/or practicum, they may not choose both.

Pregnancy Risk Assessment Fellowship, CDC

A research opportunity is currently available with the Division of Reproductive Health (DRH) within the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. 

The selected participant will train with the Multi-State Network of Linked Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System Data project. Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will train while developing professional skills in the following: project coordination, public health, epidemiology, complex survey design and analysis, data linkage, multiple data systems in maternal and child health, and attending webinars and seminars, and conferences.

The learning objectives for this appointment include:

  • The participant will develop meeting and project coordination skills.
  • The participate will develop knowledge in epidemiology, public health surveillance data, survey data, and administrative data systems.
  • The participate will learn methods for data linkage and data analysis.
  • The participate will do literature review on maternal and child health topics.

*Anticipated Start Date: August 2020

Qualifications 

The qualified candidate should have received a master’s or doctoral (preferred) degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing one of the degrees and will reach completion by the appointment start date. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

Remote Data & Operations Intern, IDinsight

Role Description

We seek a Data & Operations Intern for Summer 2020 to build and maintain key internal data systems, dashboards, and visualizations that facilitate our ongoing social impact work, strategic planning, and internal forecasting.  The Intern will join the Global Operations team at a pivotal time, with visibility into many parts of how our non-profit functions as we build a complete internal data ecosystem. This role will report to the Chief of Staff to the CEO and work closely with several other stakeholders, including the Technical Team Director, Global Operations team, and India and Africa Chiefs of Staff.

To support our organization’s internal data/knowledge management and impact measurement, we are looking for an intern with significant business and technical experience to help us build strong data systems and processes. Specifically, the role will entail the full cycle of product development for new systems, as well as maintenance of existing dashboards and knowledge management systems. The intern will directly contribute to:

  • Building and launching a management information system (MIS) to track all IDinsight current and developing projects, global staff, social impact measurement, staff satisfaction and “pulse” surveys, and organizational and project finances
  • Conducting thorough user research, including needs assessments and focus groups, to determine the highest priority data systems updates
  • Researching and recommending the optimal platforms on which to maintain key organizational data, knowledge, and dashboards
  • Developing a user guide for all data systems and dashboards and publishing internal or external communications on best practices in data management, data dashboards, and internal impact measurement in the social sector
  • Collaborating with the Operations, Technical, and Regional Leadership teams on other key data or knowledge management priorities

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree, or entering the final year of an undergraduate or graduate program

Public Health Fellowship, CDC

Role Description

A program reporting and communications opportunity is currently available with the Evaluation, Policy, Innovations and Curriculum team in the Workforce Institute and Development Branch (WIDB)/Division of Global Health Protection, within the Center for Global Health (CGH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.

The participant will learn and receive training in CDC’s global health capacity building programs through conducting information gathering and analysis activities about country Field and Epidemiology Training Programs (FETP) that highlight the success of the fellows, residents and trainees work. FETP’s aim is to build capacity specifically for public health institutions and workforce, using a learn by doing approach, and are supported by US CDC to improve the detection, response and prevention of health threats within a country and internationally. Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant can expect to receive training & skills by (1) contributing to the development of program communication products, including participating in team, branch and division-level planning meetings (2) updating and collating surveillance data, with follow up to ensure data accuracy and completeness.

Responsibilities

  • Serves on branch, team and workgroups for communication and program advocacy activities and collaborate with the monitoring and evaluation team with entry of frontline FETP evaluation of data
  • Contribute to the following activities:
    • Identification, collection and development of success stories for each of the partnerships
    • Revision and development of country FETP supported-by- partners fact sheets 
    • Data entry as requested by the Monitoring and Evaluation team Reporting on quality of the collected and providing feedback for refining data collection/entry tools, analyzes results, and provides oral and written reports
    • Updating of the “historic database” that feeds the FETP Info tool

Position details 

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is part-time (20 hours per week) at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

Job Description

Works under the limited supervision of the RLHO Analytics and Information Management (AIM) Unit Manager and under guidance by the Syndromic Surveillance Team Lead, serves as the Epidemiologist for the Texas Syndromic Surveillance System (TxS2), a statewide system hosted by the Department of State Health Services (DSHS). The Epidemiologist II has considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement. Designs and implements surveillance processes for disease outbreaks and oversees the analysis of syndromic surveillance data for the State. Develops educational materials and operational manuals, and provides training and guidance to epidemiologists in the eight health service regions and local health departments across the State. Provides consultation and coordinates with hospitals and other data submitters regarding data use agreements and data transmission. Provides consultation and coordinates with local health departments for potential disease outbreaks and system functionality. Assists the Team Lead by coordinating with health service regions for input to the Syndromic Surveillance Governance Council. Prepares briefings for the senior and executive level staff. Provides daily briefings to the Syndromic Surveillance Team Lead and the AIM Unit Manager for disease situational awareness.
