Oral Health Epidemiologist, Wisconsin DHS

Position Summary 

The incumbent will provide statewide leadership and expertise for surveillance methodologies, design, and evaluation of collection protocols, statistical analysis, interpretation of results, and presentation of findings for oral health issues. In response to requests for technical assistance, the incumbent will provide consultation, resources, and guidance to state and local oral health partners related to oral health issues, concerns and planning for local basic screening surveys. In this position, the incumbent will serve as the primary lead in compiling and developing narrative, statistical, visualizations, maps, fact sheets and major reports to include but not limited to the burden of oral disease, disparities, Medicaid utilization, community water fluoridation, sealant application, workforce and other reports for dissemination to policy makers, program decision makers, local agencies, health professionals, and others as appropriate.

The incumbent will be responsible for developing and implementing oral health surveillance using the Association of State and Territorial Dental Directors Basic Screening Survey guidance. Specifically, leading the planning, implementation, analysis and reporting for Head Start/preschool children, third grade children, ninth grade children, adults and older adults. The incumbent will also be responsible for working with other program staff to assure that surveillance activities are aligned with programmatic activities to achieve deliverables and desired outcomes.

Qualifications

Minimally qualified candidates will have:

  • Experience identifying populations and sub-populations at greatest risk for poor health outcomes.
  • Experience using statistical methods and computer applications to input and analyze epidemiologic data (e.g. MS Excel, SAS, STATA, SPSS, ArcGIS, Infogram, Tableau, etc.).
  • Experience applying epidemiologic methods relevant to oral health or chronic disease surveillance such as creating surveys; data matching to identify areas for quality improvement and outcomes; identifying trends; economic burden and impact; etc.
  • Experience using data visualization techniques to develop materials for dissemination of results/findings for quality or performance improvement.
  • Ability to work as a team including establishing and maintaining effective relationships.
  • Ability to organize, multi-task and prioritize workload demands.
  • Effective communication skills.

In addition, well-qualified candidates will also have:

  • Experience directing epidemiological surveillance of oral health issues aimed at reducing the burden of oral health disease (e.g. dental caries, periodontal disease, access to care, etc.).
  • Experience working in a public health setting.

Public Health Analyst, CDC/NCIRD

Position Description 

The National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD), Division of Viral Diseases (DVD), Office of Director (OD) is offering an opportunity to an unclassified set of duties to serve as a Public Health Analyst. The mission of the Division of Viral Diseases (DVD) is to prevent disease, disability, and death from viral diseases through immunization and other prevention measures. This office is within the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, which plays a critical role in outbreak response, diagnostic epidemiology, vaccine development, and control of respiratory and vaccine-preventable disease nationally and globally. The incumbent will work in the Global Health Sciences (GHS) team and will support in part the Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA) initiative. The GHSA is a United States Government initiative and provides a framework to ensure that all nations are able to prevent, detect, and rapidly respond to infectious disease threats in order to protect Americans from emerging infectious disease threats such as Ebola and Zika.

Research Project Manager, Dartmouth School of Medicine

Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine is seeking a Research Project Manager in the Department of Epidemiology. Functioning independently and working alongside the Research Project Director, the candidate will manage the development and implementation of a large scale, ongoing environmental maternal and child health study being conducted throughout New Hampshire and the Dartmouth Hitchcock service area that is contributing to a national effort to address how pre- peri- and postnatal environmental exposures impact childhood development and health outcomes.

Responsibilities 

  • Responsibilities will include participating in the development of research protocols including selection and design of questionnaires and biologic sample collection and measurement methods (clinical measures, anthropometry, neurodevelopment).
  • Responsibilities will also include oversight of data and sample collection, supervision and training of study personnel at multiple sites to ensure that maternal/pediatric assessments are completed correctly and that study milestones and goals are met in a timely manner.
  • Other responsibilities include providing assistance with report, grant and manuscript preparation, and budget planning and monitoring.
  • This position requires the ability to work a flexible schedule, occasional travel to study sites within New Hampshire, and to attend national meetings

Qualifications

  • Candidates for this position should have relevant experience in a research or clinical environment with direct study related experience preferably in the maternal/child and/or environmental health fields.
  • A PhD or Master’s Degree in public health, maternal/child health, environmental health, social sciences or other health related field is preferred.

Summary:   

The Expert Analyst is responsible for identifying, collecting, analyzing, and maintaining data to evaluate issues that support prospective business decisions.  This role also coordinates projects for senior management.

Responsibilities/Tasks:

  • Conduct trend analysis, report development, ad-hoc analysis and support
  • Applies advanced statistical methodology to answer specific questions or problems. Advanced statistical methodology includes, but is not limited to, multiple linear regression, multiple logistic regression, trend analysis, hierarchical linear modeling, generalized linear mixed models, and sampling techniques. Assist in design and implement epidemiologic studies to evaluate the effectiveness of clinical programs
  • Ensure complete, accurate and timely data for reporting purposes.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously by establishing project plans and objectives to ensure goal attainment within defined parameters
  • Communicate results of analysis to management via reports/presentations and assist management in implementing programs that provide solutions.
  • Develop documentation, reports and presentations for all levels within the organization including executive leadership.

Employment Qualifications  

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Economics, Health Care, Statistics or a related field.  Master’s degree in Public Health, Epidemiology or another related field preferred.  Continuous learning, as defined by the Company’s learning philosophy, is required.  Certification or progress toward certification is highly preferred and encouraged.

Experience:

Five (5) years of experience in a related field required to provide the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities for the role.

Epidemiologist Fellowship, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health

An epidemiologist position is available at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) Field Research Branch (FRB) in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Description

FRB is seeking an epidemiologist to conduct large-scale, in-depth studies examining the effects of workplace exposures on chronic health effects. Findings will contribute to protecting worker health through occupational health policies and recommendations for controlling hazards.

FRB epidemiologists have access to industry-specific and population-based epidemiologic data that include occupational cohort, cross-sectional, and case-control studies. FRB staff collaborate with university-based research groups and other government agencies permitting access to rich data from studies of a variety of workplace exposures and occupations, and linkage to cancer registries. Competitive intramural funding opportunities are open for researchers interested in proposing new studies within the NIOSH mission. Areas of focus in FRB include cancer, cardiovascular, reproductive health, and health inequity though epidemiologists with other research interests are encouraged to apply.

Qualifications and Desired Skills

Applicants must have a doctoral degree in epidemiology or occupational/environmental health or be within 1 year of graduation. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (https://www.ed.gov/accreditation) or equivalent at the time the degree was obtained. Candidates should be experienced in epidemiologic study design and data analysis and have excellent written and oral communication skills. HIB is seeking a research health scientist to conduct surveillance and surveillance research in a multidisciplinary unit of 35 dedicated individuals responsible for tracking work-related diseases, injuries and exposures; identifying new and emerging health and safety problems in the workplace; providing evidence that directs intervention and prevention activities; and monitoring the overall impact of occupational health research in the United States. HIB scientists use existing data sources collected by other organizations to develop national and state-based illness and hazard tracking systems to provide information about worker health to policymakers, researchers, practitioners, and the public.

HIB scientists have access to population-based survey data and occupational exposure data. This information is used to estimate the magnitude of occupational health and safety problems, determine the distribution of illnesses and injuries, and monitor changes in exposures and hazards in occupational settings at the state and national levels. Infectious Disease Epidemiologist, Rhode Island Department of Health

Position Description: 

This position is in the Center for Acute Infectious Disease Epidemiology (CAIDE), within the Division of Preparedness, Response, Infectious Disease, and Emergency Medical Services.  The individual will work primarily within CAIDE but may occasionally be required to work in the Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD and TB, also within the Division of Preparedness, Response, Infectious Disease, and Emergency Medical Services.

This position will serve as a general Public Health Epidemiologist focused on acute infectious diseases, but may have to work in the other program areas as needed.  Responsibilities include conducting routine surveillance activities for assigned diseases (for example Lyme disease, foodborne diseases, pertussis), assuring data quality, performing epidemiological analyses, preparing and presenting summary reports, assisting with outbreak investigations, communicating with the public, collaborating with community partners and clinicians, and other duties as assigned.  

Desired skills include proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Access, and PowerPoint; experience in SAS, Epi Info and Arc GIS preferred.  Candidates should be comfortable working in a team environment, as well as independently.  This position may occasionally be required to work outside of normal business hours to respond to outbreaks.

General Statement of Duties:

To analyze and document the impact of various chronic and infectious disease processes on the population of the state and/or communities, as well as on other specific subpopulations at risk; to monitor and analyze the incidence, prevalence and determinants of disease such as environment, genetics, lifestyle and access to medical care; to identify effective health promotion and disease prevention strategies; to design and/or implement health promotion and disease prevention interventions; and to do related work as required.   

Required Qualifications for Appointment

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND CAPACITIES: A thorough knowledge of descriptive and analytical epidemiologic techniques, research and evaluation methodologies, and biostatistics as described in national standards such as the Council for State and Territorial Epidemiologists’ Applied Epidemiology Competencies; strong written and oral communication and presentation skills; the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external partners; and related capacities and abilities. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Education: Possession of a Master of Public Health, a Master of Science in Epidemiology, or a master’s degree in a related health field with specialization in the area of epidemiology.

CDC Epidemiologist/Health Scientist, Oak Ridge Institute

Description

A fellowship opportunity is currently available in the Partnerships and Evaluation Branch (PEB), Division of Health Informatics and Surveillance (DHIS), Center for Surveillance, Epidemiology, and Laboratory Services (CSELS), at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

Our mission at DHIS is to provide leadership and cross-cutting support in developing public health information systems, managing public health surveillance programs, and provisioning health related data required to monitor, control and prevent the occurrence and spread of diseases and other adverse health conditions. The selected candidate will learn about, and participate in conducting analytic projects using large administrative health care datasets such as insurance claims data, electronic medical records, hospital discharge data, and others. 

Under the guidance of a mentor, the research participant will have the opportunity to:

  • Develop and participate in research and epidemiological studies related to the use of different acquired data sources
  • Provide data management and analytic expertize for both new and ongoing research projects
  • Conduct literature reviews and summaries to support analytic projects
  • Assist with data management and conduct analyses using statistical software and other analytic tools
  • Contribute to the development of presentations and publications to disseminate research findings for both internal and external audiences
  • Participate in different webinars, trainings, and meetings as recommended by his or her supervisor
  • Collaborate with team members and stakeholders to creatively solve problems

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, GA, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

Qualifications

The qualified candidate must have received a master’s degree in public health or a related field, with an emphasis on quantitative analytic skills and epidemiological methods. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

Preferred skills:

  • Experience using statistical software, such as SAS or R, for data cleaning and analysis
  • Knowledge of epidemiological and statistical methods

The PHI/CDC Global Health Fellowship Program, implemented by the Public Health Institute, is a CDC-funded fellowship that supports promising emerging global public health professionals to develop technical skills needed to respond to today’s public health needs and challenges. The PHI/CDC Global Health Fellowship Program builds on a long history of fellowship programs by the Centers for Disease Control and Public Health Institute for students, graduates, and emerging professionals to strengthen the global public health workforce and programs with an emphasis in the areas of epidemiology, HIV prevention, monitoring and evaluation (M&E), strategic information, program management, and surveillance.

Fellowships are yearlong placements within CDC offices working across six technical tracks. Fellows may have the opportunity to extend or apply to a new fellowship, but may not exceed three years maximum as a fellow.
