RSPH Fall 2020 Public Health Virtual Career Fair, 9/11

Description

The need for diverse, well-trained public health practitioners has never been greater. In our commitment to ensuring the availability of opportunities for our students, the RSPH Office of Career Development is excited to announce our Fall Virtual Career Fair.

A highly interactive experience, this fair facilitates interactions between employers and students through a variety of virtual modalities including voice calls and video chat rooms. In addition, employers are able to virtually screen candidates, receive electronic resumes, host walk-in hours and set one-on-one appointment times. The Career Development team will also be available to address any of your last-minute questions or concerns.

Center for Global Safe Wash Open House, 9/8

2020 Public Health Ethics Forum, 9/11

Description 

The National Center for Bioethics in Research and Health Care at Tuskegee University and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Office of Minority Health and Health Equity invite you to the 2020 Public Health Ethics Forum on September 11, 2020, from 1 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET via Zoom. This year’s theme is Ethical Dilemmas in Rural Health.

The goal of the 2020 Public Health Ethics Forum is to examine ethical considerations relating to place-based public health approaches in rural areas and populations.

CDC defines public health ethics as “a systematic process to clarify, prioritize, and justify possible courses of public health action based on ethical principles, values and beliefs of stakeholders, and scientific and other information.”1 In order to ensure that public health practice is ethical, ethical theory and an ethical analysis process should guide it. A public health ethics lens ensures a uniquely expanded focus on population health opportunities and challenges.

The forum will feature a diverse group of speakers who will focus on ethical issues for improving health within rural populations as well as sessions covering:

  • Impact of COVID-19 on Rural America
  • Ethical Considerations Regarding the Barriers and Solutions to Accessing Health Care Services in Rural Areas and Populations
  • Physical Determinants of Rural Health: Addressing the Natural and Built Environments and Environmental Justice Communities
  • Working to Achieve Health Equity in Rural Communities

Community-Based Opportunities Information Session, 9/10

Description 

Join the Gangarosa Department of Environmental Health and HERCULES on Thursday, September 10th at 12:15pm via Zoom for a jointly sponsored Info Session on Community Based Opportunities!

This session will focus on environmental health related community-based APE and ILE opportunities, general research opportunities and more. All students who are interested in community-based research and engagement are welcome to attend, regardless of departmental affiliation. Michael Burns, the CEO and Executive Director of the Community & College Partners Program (C2P2), will also be present to discuss C2P2’s mission and share ways to get involved. You can learn more about C2P2 in the attached document.

Now is Time to Modernize U.S. Public Health Surveillance Seminar, 8/26

Seminar Description

Our world with no borders to pandemics requires that scientists work together forming bonds of collegiality and build bridges of mutual public health benefit, not walls of separation. The world is different now. It is misguided to think that the “hoarding” of data/information/messages/specimens is the right way to act because of paternalistic, economic, or political reasons. A better way forward is to focus global efforts to reverse the current presumption of controlled access in favor of open public health policies and practices that unambiguously support open access to public health surveillance (PHS) information. Moving to open public health (i.e., the open sharing of PHS data and confidentiality protected, indicator- based data, pathogen isolates, clinical specimens) is an important step toward modernizing PHS. We have both the responsibility and opportunity to modernize U.S. PHS after recent glaring failures. Evolved over the past 70 years as a siIoed, health outcome-specific component of public health practice, U.S. PHS is neither efficient nor effective. A new, proven, more-advanced PHS approach and model was recently presented to a Federal Policy Work Group advising Senator Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, Chairman, U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions called Integrated Public Health Surveillance (IDSR). Conceived and piloted in 1998 in Tanzania, IDSR has been successfully implemented in all of Africa under the authority of WHO/Afro; plus Pakistan and India. Now is time to modernize U.S. PHS!

 

Speaker Bio

Scott JN McNabb, PhD, MS, Rollins School of Public Health Research Professor, Hubert Department of Global Health.

Before joining the U.S. CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) and serving the 2- year EIS residency in New Orleans, LA, Dr. McNabb worked for the Oklahoma State Health Department. Most of his professional efforts have focused on serving those in underdeveloped, underserved global settings. Before retirement from CDC, he was Associate Director for Science; Public Health Informatics and Technology Program Office; Office for Surveillance, Epidemiology, and Laboratory Services. Now Research Professor at Emory University, Rollins School of Public Health, he directs the King Abdullah Fellowship Program; and is PI of the exciting, new Africa CDC Institute for Workforce Development.

And how can we ensure equitable access to vaccines and therapeutics, once available, within the world’s most vulnerable communities? Jocelyn Kelly, director of the program on Gender, Rights and Resilience at the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, discussed these issues and answered viewer questions during this Facebook Live Q&A with The World’s Elana Gordon.

Endemic Racism During a Pandemic – CDC Day Keynote Speech & Panel, 8/21

This year’s virtual CDC keynote speech and panel for incoming first years is open to the entire Rollins Community this year! The theme for CDC Day is Endemic Racism During a Pandemic: Navigating the Intersection of Racism and COVID-19 in Atlanta.

The event will be live streamed from the CDC and will feature Dr. Angelica Fugerson, Atlanta’s first-ever Chief Health Officer (and Rollins Alumna) as our keynote speaker. There will also be a Faculty and Alumni Panel that will be moderated by Dr. Kim Jacob-Arriola.
