Description 

As a member of the Injury Surveillance and Analytics (ISA) Team, assist in data analytics, including data management, quality, and organization as well as project management of research related to sports injuries and player health. Responsibilities include contributions to development of study questions and substantive contributions to ad-hoc and scheduled reports (analysis and writing), data collection and management, creation of datasets using complex existing data sources, and ownership of client deliverables.

 

Responsibilities 

  • Creates datasets and conducts statistical analyses in SAS for analytic reports.
  • Leads comprehensive data management tasks, data quality control processes, and data cleaning for injury surveillance.
  • Builds and manages automated reports and data listings.
  • Organizes and supports both research projects and rapid analytics related to sports injury epidemiology.

Program Evaluation Fellowship, CDC

Description

A research opportunity is currently available with the Center for Surveillance, Epidemiology and Laboratory Sciences (CSELS) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

 

Research Project

The Fellow will collaborate with subject matter experts and other stakeholders (internal and external) to plan and implement an evaluation of key components of the electronic case reporting (eCR) program. In the United States, jurisdictions are required to report more than 200 conditions diagnosed by doctors or laboratories to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). These notifiable diseases or conditions require timely information on individual cases to prevent and control spread. eCR is automated generation and transmission of case reports from electronic health records to public health agencies for review and action is an important component of public health data modernization nationwide. The Fellow does not need previous knowledge or experience specific to information technology, informatics, electronic case reporting, or public health surveillance. The Fellow will contribute to a high-profile evaluation, start to finish that will include opportunities to develop public-facing products that will be disseminated widely (e.g., logic model and narrative explanation of the graphic, conference presentations, peer-reviewed manuscript). The Fellow will interact closely with personnel in the Public Health Informatics Office (PHIO) and other evaluators in the Center.

Learning Objectives

  • Importantly, the Fellow will have the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and skills relevant to (a) facilitation to support stakeholder participation in the evaluation (e.g., to develop a logic model, prepare an evaluation plan, interpret analyzed data); (b) plain language writing; (c) presentation of efforts to diverse audiences; and (d) project planning and management that includes how to articulate decision points and deliverables over time. These opportunities to develop cross-cutting skills are an important complement to evaluation-specific competencies.

Community Advisor, Emory School of Medicine

Description

The Community Advisor will be responsible for answering inbound calls for PEACE for MOMS, Georgia’s perinatal psychiatry consultation and access program, triaging those phone calls, scheduling consultations, and providing access to support service referrals to clinicians and their patients.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as first point of communication between PEACE for MOMs and clinicians in the community (physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, midwives

  • Schedule consultations for perinatal patients with our PEACE for MOMS Psychiatrists, as well as our psychiatrists and community clinicians

A research training opportunity is currently available with the Child Development and Disability Branch (CDDB) of the Division of Human Development and Disability (DHDD), within the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

NCBDDD seeks to promote the health of babies, children, and adults with disabilities. The work of NCBDDD includes identifying the causes of birth defects and developmental disabilities, helping children to develop and reach their full potential, and promoting health and well-being among people of all ages with disabilities. NCBDDD has three Divisions that carry out this mission: Division of Congenital and Developmental Disorders (DCDD), Human Development and Disability (DHDD), and Blood Disorders (DBD).

This opportunity is within DHDD’s Child Development and Disability Branch (CDDB). The mission of CDDB is to conduct inclusive surveillance, research, and programs to improve the lives of children with or at risk for developmental delays and disabilities. Under the guidance of mentors from the Office of the Branch Chief, the participant will train and contribute to CDDB’s portfolio in developing and communicating research and furthering the scientific base of several of the programs within the branch currently underway, including applied research and surveillance related to Child Development and Disabilities. 

Research Project 

The overall purpose of the primary project is to identify population-based indicators related to autism and developmental disabilities that are currently sought by different groups in communities and at the national level.  The participant will train with staff to describe the audience that would utilize identified data indicators, CDC’s current capability to produce the indicator from existing data and resources, and any barriers or steps needed for that indicator to become routinely reported.

Birth Defects Surveillance and Research Fellowship, CDC

Three research opportunities are currently available in the Division of Birth Defects and Infant Disorders (DBDID), within the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. 

NCBDDD’s mission is to improve the health of children and adults by preventing birth defects and developmental disabilities, and complications of heredity blood disorders; promoting optimal child development, and the health and wellness among children and adults living with disabilities. Participants will train within the Birth Defects Monitoring and Research Branch or the Infant Outcomes Monitoring, Research, and Prevention Branch. The DBDID conducts birth defects surveillance and research into the possible causes and long term outcomes of birth defects, emerging threats to infants/pregnant women, intervention and prevention activities.

 

Research Project

The purpose of this fellowship program is to provide an educational experience to individuals interested in the field of public health and reproductive and birth defects epidemiology. Opportunities are aimed at furthering the health communication science, epidemiological and analytical knowledge of participants. Participants are assigned to train on various projects and can expect to gain valuable learning experiences in the development, implementation, and evaluation of health communication campaigns, surveillance and research study management, database cleaning, data analyses, intervention, prevention strategies, interpretation of the results, writing manuscripts and giving oral presentations.
