Blood, Organ, and Other Tissue Safety ORISE Position, CDC

Position Description

The Office of Blood, Organ, and Other Tissue Safety (BOOTS), Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion (DHQP), National Center for Emerging Zoonotic and Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) is seeking qualified applicants for a an ORISE position. The successful candidate will support 2 BOOTS-related activities: 1) the National Blood Collection and Utilization Survey (NBCUS) and 2) National Healthcare Safety Network Hemovigilance (NHSN) Module. Specific activities are described below.

 

Duties and Responsibilities 

NBCUS:

  • Participates in facility identification, outreach and enrollment for the NBCUS
  • Provides technical support to blood centers and healthcare facilities participating in the NBCUS.

NHSN:

  • Conduct data analyses and author peer reviewed journal manuscripts related to blood transfusion safety.
  • Develop and maintain technical expertise in the function and use of the NHSN Biovigilance Component including thorough understanding of the application from a user perspective. This is a continuous activity.
  • Handle inquiries from existing and prospective NHSN Biovigilance Component users, assist facilities with NHSN enrollment, and provide user support regarding procedures for correctly applying CDC surveillance definitions and criteria and data entry. This is a continuous activity.
  • Participate in the change request and implementation process with the NHSN development team, including submitting change requests, defining business requirements with a business analyst, and testing and verification of the surveillance application prior to release. Changes to the surveillance system are released twice per year.
  • Investigating defects in the surveillance application as discovered by participating users, communicating defects to the NHSN QA team, verifying fixes, and communicating updates back to end users. This is a continuous activity.
  • Assist with data management, validation, and cleaning, including analyses to assess data quality and outreach to users for data entry correction and completion.
  • Identify and addresses opportunities to enhance usability of hemovigilance surveillance data for prevention.
  • Assist with the development of NHSN modules and mechanisms for electronic reporting to NHSN. Communicate with users and provides technical expertise to improve user interface and analytic and group user functions.
  • Assist with maintenance of the technical content of protocols, definitions, and data collection forms for the NHSN Biovigilance Component (including the hemovigilance module). Surveillance methods are reviewed at least annually
  • Attends weekly BOOTS staff meetings, bi-weekly NHSN User Support Team meetings, bi-weekly NHSN Development – User Support communication meetings, and weekly update meetings with technical monitor.
  • Requires a Master’s degree and relevant experience in epidemiology and/or biostatistics.

COVID-19 Vaccine Response Volunteer, Georgia DPH

Opportunity Description 

Atlanta – The Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) is receiving offers from medical professionals and other individuals looking for ways to help with the COVID-19 vaccination response. An effective response relies on volunteers who are pre-credentialed and organized. Georgia Responds is Georgia’s health and medical volunteer program which matches the skills and credentials of medical and nonmedical volunteers to help stop the spread of COVID-19 in Georgia.

Licensed medical volunteers including doctors, nurses, pharmacists and advanced EMS personnel (EMT Intermediate and above) may be used to administer vaccination. Nonmedical volunteers may be used in administrative roles such as registering individuals for vaccination, data input, language interpretation, other administrative areas as needed, and providing guidance and assistance at vaccination administration sites.

Prospective volunteers will be asked for their name, address, contact information and occupation type. Epidemiology Fellowship, CDC

Description

A research opportunity is currently available with the Field Research Branch, in the Division of Field Studies and Engineering (DFSE), within the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Researchers in the Field Research Branch conduct large-scale and in-depth studies examining the effects of workplace exposures on chronic health effects. Findings will contribute to protecting worker health through occupational health policies and recommendations for controlling hazards. Areas of focus in FRB include cancer, cardiovascular disease, reproductive health, and health inequity.

The appointment is full-time at CDC at a facility located in Cincinnati, OH.  Because of COVID-19 travel and facility restrictions, initially the position will require telework.  Mentors will work with participants to arrange an initial in-person visit to the nearest CDC location to receive teleworking equipment. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities 

The selected participant will work with the FRB epidemiology team on current research studies.  Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant may be involved in the following activities:

  • Conduct literature searches of published and grey scientific literature
  • Conduct quality assurance reviews of summaries on emerging COVID-19 literature, including checking for 1) completeness; 2) updating citations; and 3) verifying abstracted data summaries are accurate
  • Conduct statistical analyses and write scientific manuscripts using data from a study of healthcare workers exposure to COVID-19. Research areas include PPE use and availability, mental health, and knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with COVID-19 prevention.
  • Contribute to the development of educational and other communication materials used by principal investigators to communicate research findings

The appointment will offer the opportunity for multidisciplinary collaboration with epidemiologists, industrial hygienists, statisticians, and experts in information technology.

 

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have received a master’s or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields within five years of the appointment start date, or be currently pursuing the degree.

 

Preferred skills

  • Experience in epidemiological methods and statistics
  • Knowledge of SAS (or R) statistical software desirable
  • Experience with Microsoft Office tools (Word, Power Point, Excel)
  • Strong research and communication skills

COVID-19 Surveyor, Georgia DPH

Job Description 

The Georgia Department of Public Health is looking for a current MPH student or a recent MPH graduate to provide epidemiological support to the Occupational Health (OH) Surveillance Program.
 
 This position is crucial for the implementation of a statewide Work-related COVID-19 Call-back Survey. The intern will call and interview confirmed cases of COVID-19 who worked in a non-healthcare setting during the time they likely became infected. Data collected from interviews will be entered into an electronic survey tool and spreadsheet. Results from the interviews will be used to help characterize occupational risk of COVID-19 among workers in non-health care settings and to make recommendations to better protect workers. The intern will interview cases according to established protocols and are required to follow all scripts, policies, and procedures provided by DPH, and comply with DPH training regarding confidential information related to personal information.  

The intern will be working remotely for approximately 10-15 hours per week for up to 10 weeks duration. The pay will be $15/hour ($1,500 total). The schedule is flexible. Weekends or other nontraditional hours may be required. 

 

Qualifications 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and one year of work related experience OR
  • Student seeking Master in Public Health or related degree from an accredited degree program 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Student with MPH concentration in epidemiology or occupational/environmental health Ability to speak, read, and write English

Graduate Research Assistant, Emory Prevention Research Center

Position Description

The Intervention Development, Dissemination, and Implementation Shared Resource seeks 1 part-time Graduate Research Assistants (15-20 hours/week). IDDI provides services to cancer researchers who are looking for support with behavioral science research methods. The GRA in this position will have the opportunity to work on a variety of cancer-related research projects across the cancer spectrum from primary prevention to survivorship. GRA will be involved in qualitative data analysis, conducting structured literature reviews, data collection and data entry, developing data collection instruments (e.g., surveys, focus group guides) or other project materials, preparing summaries and reports, and other duties to support research projects. Compensation is $13.50/hour, and time commitment is 15-20 hours/week. The start date can be as early as January 4th, 2021. 

 

Background

IDDI’s mission is to provide Winship members with access to expertise in behavioral science research methods, and to support them in developing, testing, or disseminating behavioral, educational, and systems interventions to prevent cancer, detect cancer early, and/or improve survivorship among Georgia residents. The IDDI team builds on expertise within the Emory Prevention Research Center (EPRC) and the Department of Behavioral, Social, and Health Education Sciences, Rollins School of Public Health. Minimum Qualifications

Highly motivated, efficient, organized, detail-oriented and interest or experience working on research, evaluation, or cancer prevention and control. Prior experience with qualitative data analysis (e.g., coding).

PSYC 770: Multilevel Modeling, Spring 2021 Course

Course Description 

This seminar provides an introduction to multilevel modeling. Multilevel models, also known as mixed, hierarchical, and random-effects models, provide a conceptual framework and an analytic option for working with clustered/nested data (Aarts, Verhage, Veenvliet, Dolan, & van der Sluis, 2014). They allow researchers to study different sources of variation in the outcomes, and the effects of predictors at different and across levels.

This seminar will consider the formulation of statistical models for multilevel modeling applications. The presentations will be conceptual and the instructor will demonstrate analyses using personal computers and provide time for “hands on” practice. We will use the software programs HLM8 (Raudenbush, Bryk, Cheong, Congdon, & Du Toit, 2019), the lmer4 R (Bates, Maechler, B., & Walker, 2015) and the WinBUGS (Lunn, Thomas, Best, & Spiegelhalter, 2000) packages, and SPSS in the seminar. The prerequisite for this seminar is a course on multiple regression.

The Emory-Georgia Tech Healthcare Innovation Program (HIP) is an interactive network among members of the Georgia Clinical & Translational Science Alliance (Georgia CTSA) that provides information, resources, and community connectivity to support and enhance innovation in healthcare research, education, and service. Key topics include quality, cost and access to health services across the contexts of providers, payers, and recipients. HIP, in collaboration with student and professional organizations, offers a wide range of seminars, events and activities designed to engage students, faculty, and staff in Health Innovation throughout the year.

 

Job Description/Requirements

Under general supervision, performs the following tasks:

  1. Coordinate and maintain communications with HIP Student Advisory Group and relevant organizations for special event planning and program development.
  2. Organize, promote and assist with student-focused activities such as interest group meetings, networking events, student seed grants and quarterly Healthcare symposia.
  3. Variety of data management tasks – including collecting, processing and analyzing data for website and other communications platforms.
  4. Provide analytic and technical assistance as needed in program projects and development.
  5. Develop and maintain HIP social media communications using suitable technology.
  6. Other responsibilities may include website updates, maintaining listservs, and other duties.

 

Qualifications and Skills

  1. Data Analysis skills – Student must have experience working with large, complex data sets and be very familiar working with Excel to clean, analyze, and present data. SAS preferred, but not a requirement.
  2. Student should be familiar with the field of Health Services Research and be able to identify studies that fall into specific topic areas. Experience with research, literature review and professional writing skills are preferred.
  3. Experience with graphic design and HTML are a plus.
  4. Organizational skills and attention to detail are important qualities to have for this job as you will be working with minimal supervision and will have multiple analyses to conduct on different data sets between meetings.
  5. An ideal candidate is a creative thinker and independent worker who takes initiative. He/she should be able to communicate effectively with all levels of faculty, students and staff.
  6. Knowledge of technology, social media and a well-established network with university groups or associations is strongly preferred.

Frank Monteith Fellowship Program, The Fulton-Dekalb Hospital Authority

Role Description

The Fulton-DeKalb Hospital Authority Fellowship Program bears the name of former Board of Trustees member, the late Frank H. Monteith. Mr. Monteith had an entrepreneurial spirit and started his own transportation company – the largest and oldest minority owned limousine service in the Southeast – which he owned and operated for 43 years. Mr. Monteith was a member of the Fulton-DeKalb Hospital Authority Board of Trustees for nine years and left a legacy of entrepreneurship and generosity. Graduate students will be afforded an opportunity to participate in a Fellowship program in honor of Mr. Monteith.

This program integrates academics with practical experience. It is an opportunity for a student to assist the organization with a project or initiative related directly or indirectly to the student’s academic work. It is designed to provide an opportunity for the student to gain knowledge and valuable work experience in the health arena, which incorporates many disciplines. Some of the fields that are potentially available for student fellowships include, but are not limited to public health, public policy, policy administration, marketing, public relations, finance, and sociology. The Fellowship Program provides opportunities to:

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for The Fulton-DeKalb Hospital Authority’s Student Fellowship Program, a student:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the United States Of America;
  • Must be currently enrolled in an accredited college, university, or vocational-technical program in the United States. We require that our interns/fellows either attend school or be a resident in Fulton County or DeKalb County, Georgia;
  • Must be eligible to receive credit hours;
  • Must be a current full-time/part-time student, as defined by that school, in the semester or quarter in which he/she applies for the fellowship;
  • Must have a cumulative Grade Point Average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Any student in the United States meeting the above requirements may apply for fellowship, but preference will be given to those students who are attending a college, university or vocational/technical school in Georgia. If at any point in the fellowship program, the fellow ceases to be enrolled in school, he/she will no longer be eligible to participate. In that event, the fellow will immediately be terminated from the program.

 

Fellowship Duration

The fellowship shall be for a maximum of 10 weeks, a semester. Exact starting and ending dates and daily schedules will be arranged between the fellow and The FDHA.

 

Compensation

The FDHA will cover the cost of parking for fellows and other expenses incidental, travel (gas), to their work with The FDHA, as shall be approved in advance by The FDHA Chief Executive Officer or designee; no further compensation will be provided.

 

Scholarship

Fellows shall receive a three thousand dollar ($4,000) scholarship. Fellows must work at least 15 hours per week for the duration of the fellowship. Should the fellow fail to return to school after the fellowship is complete, the fellow will not be eligible for a scholarship. If a scholarship is paid to an institution and the fellow does not return to the institution, the fellow is responsible for ensuring that all funds are immediately returned to The FDHA. Fellow must choose scholarship paid directly to school or course credit and/or practicum, they may not choose both.

 

Duration

Participation in the fellowship program may be renewed for one additional semester based upon the consent of The FDHA CEO. Renewal consideration will be based upon the fellow’s performance during preceding fellowship successful completion of the additional 10 week term.
