Planetary Health, Spring 2021 Course

Description 

Human beings are profoundly altering the natural systems of the planet, resulting in a variety of unintended population health consequences. This course explores several of the mechanisms by which humans are influencing the physical, chemical, and ecological conditions on the planet, and some of the potential consequences of those ongoing changes in systems for human societies. Although all topics presented in this course are intersectional, the impacts can be broadly grouped into planetary health impacts of ecosystem changes (“biosphere”), and planetary health impacts of geological and atmospheric changes (“geosphere”). Successful completion of this course will refine skills in systems thinking and regard for planetary challenges.

Graduate Research Assistant, PRISM

*This position is eligible for REAL award*

 

Role Description

The Know@Home (K@H) study is a longitudinal randomized control trial housed within the PRISM Health research group in the Department of Epidemiology. PRISM is led by Dr. Patrick Sullivan and a team of EPI department faculty and staff. Know@Home is a research project taking place in 11 states across the U.S. This study is evaluating online recruitment approaches as well as health promotion strategies to support HIV testing for Black or African-American and Hispanic or Latino gay and bisexual men and transgender women and non-binary people. As a part of the study, participants are mailed home HIV test kits. Some who are enrolled as participants in the study will be randomized to have access to the Know@Home app/website. This app/website includes information about HIV and STI prevention, treatment, and also includes the option to order home STI testing, condoms, and lubricant for free.

The graduate research assistant would work on tasks around implementation of the study including communications with research participants, enrollment and retention activities, quality checking of data, and other duties as assigned. The ideal candidate is extremely detail oriented, experienced with Microsoft excel, and has working knowledge of HIV and STIs and sexual and gender minority populations.

HIV and COVID-19 Adaptations Intern, Public Health Institute

Opportunity Description 

Sustaining Technical and Analytic Resources (STAR) is a project of the Public Health Institute (PHI) in partnership with the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) and the University of California,San Francisco (UCSF), supported by the US Agency for International Development (USAID). STAR is a Global Health talent hub. Through fellowships, internships, and strategic partnerships, STAR supports building the capacity of diverse global health professionals and organizations at all levels to make inclusive, collaborative, and innovative contributions to global health. STAR participants collaborate in the development of systems and tools that strengthen and sustain the local and global health response.

The Office of HIV/AIDS (OHA) is the focus of HIV/AIDS technical leadership for USAID and has primary responsibility for leading the Agency’s efforts within President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), a $52 billion multifaceted approach to combating the disease in more than 120 countries around the world since 2003. Under the leadership of the US Department of State’s Office of the US Global AIDS Coordinator (OGAC) and in cooperation with other US Government (USG) partners, international organizations, and nongovernmental organizations, USAID provides global technical leadership on the full range of issues related to HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and treatment; manages numerous research and field support programs; and monitors the impact of the Agency’s HIV/AIDS programs. In this endeavor, USAID works very closely with a range of USG agencies involved in the fight against AIDS, such as the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Department of Defense, and Peace Corps. Position Description 

The HIV and COVID-19 Adaptations Intern (Intern) will be assigned to the Prevention, Care and Treatment Division of OHA within the Bureau for Global Health. The Intern will support the OHA COVID-19 Cluster, which coordinates analyses of COVID-19 impacts on PEPFAR programming and of programmatic adaptations and innovations in the face of COVID-19. In addition to OHA’s primary responsibility for leading the Agency’s efforts within PEPFAR, OHA/PCT provides clinical technical assistance for the Agency’s COVID-19 response, with a particular focus on care of severely ill COVID patients in coordination with the USAID-coordinated donation of ventilators to many countries.

 

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled masters or other post-bachelor’s degree candidate or completion of such within the past 12 months, including nursing, physician assistant or medical degree candidates.
  • Knowledge of public health practices, infectious diseases, disease control, and epidemiologic methods.
  • Professional or academic experience with global health programming and implementation.
  • Ability to analyze data from different sources/databases utilizing multiple data analytic platforms.
  • Ability to create and present data visuals. Demonstrated knowledge of Excel and Tableau preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal, facilitation and teambuilding skills, and ability to work cross-culturally with diverse teams.
  • Demonstrated innovative thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent analytical, written, and oral communication skills.
  • This position may require travel. Ability to participate in a field experience, which may involve domestic and/or international travel and overnight stays for up to 2 weeks pending lifting of COVID-19 restrictions.
  • US citizenship or US permanent residency required.

Vaccine-Preventable Disease Surveillance Internship, Georgia DPH

Description

This is temporary or hourly paid work performing professional health care services. Positions in this job are established for less than 9 months or scheduled for less than 30 hours per week and are not eligible for benefits if the position status is temporary (i.e., SCOA 513). Positions in this job are established for greater than 9 months and scheduled for greater than 30 hours per week if the position status is permanent labor (i.e., SCOA 512). Normally permanent labor positions are eligible for Health Insurance benefits.

This internship could also be used for a student’s practicum and/or thesis.

 

Job Responsibilities

The Georgia Department of Public Health is looking for a current MPH student or an incoming MPH-seeking student to assist in patient interviewing, data entry, data collection, data management, medical chart reviews, and other clerical work. The position includes calling cases and controls to conduct interviews related to communicable disease surveillance, special studies, and outbreaks. Data entry and management responsibilities will include using various databases, such as Excel, Access, and the Georgia electronic notifiable disease system. Although the person filling this position will have the opportunity to learn about notifiable disease surveillance in general, the focus will be following up on reportable vaccine-preventable diseases (i.e. diphtheria, measles, mumps, pertussis, polio, rubella, tetanus, and varicella). The position is temporary and intended for a student enrolled in an accredited public health degree program as the intention of the job duties is to provide applied public health knowledge and skills.

 

Position Responsibilities:

The incumbent will be employed for approximately 15-20 hours per week.  The pay will be $14 an hour.  The schedule is flexible, but the employee must conduct interviews, enter data, and perform other activities at the Department of Public Health offices in downtown Atlanta during normal business hours for more than half of the total weekly work time.  During the current COVID-19 response, the intern can perform job duties remotely. Additional interviews and duties can be conducted during weeknight and weekend hours.  This job can potentially include more hours during the summer and holiday breaks.  The position could fulfill MPH practicum requirements.  As part of a practicum experience, the student will:

  1. Gain an understanding of how notifiable disease surveillance functions.
  2. Understand how outbreak investigations are conducted.
  3. Have an opportunity to analyze notifiable disease surveillance, study, and/or outbreak data.  

 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and one year of work related experience OR four years of work related experience at an executive level.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Student seeking Master in Public Health or related degree from an accredited degree program.
  • Experience working with databases.
  • Experience conducting interviews

EH 720: Introduction to Physiologically-Based Toxicokinetic/Pharmacokinetic Modeling

Description 

There is still space available to register in EHS 720: Introduction to Physiologically-Based Toxicokinetic (PBTK)/Pharmacokinetic (PBPK) Modeling with Dr. Qiang Zhang!

The health effects of environmental or pharmaceutical chemicals depend on the concentrations of the xenobiotics and their metabolites in the target tissues. Understanding and predicting chemical internal concentrations (tissue dosimetry) requires a physiologically-based toxicokinetic (PBTK) or pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modeling approach. Based on human physiology and anatomy, PBTK/PBPK models mechanistically simulate the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination (ADME) processes that affect the fates of exogenous chemicals in the human body, producing, as model output, changes in chemical tissue concentrations over time. PBTK/PBPK modeling has be increasingly applied in chemical health risk assessment and drug development. Students will learn numerical simulation tools to model what the body does to the chemicals in this course. It targets:

  • Environmental health science students interested in chemical tissue dosimetry, internal exposure, interpretation of biomarkers of exposures, in vitro to in vivo extrapolation (IVIVE) of chemical dosimetry
  • Pharmacology/toxicology students interested in quantitative simulation of tissue- specific drug dosimetry beyond classical, compartmental PK.
  • Students and researchers in biosciences, nutritional science, anesthesiology, biomedical engineering, and chemical engineering interested in computational approaches to predicting tissue concentrations of environmental, industrial, dietary, and pharmaceutical chemicals.

GRA for Healthcare Associated Infections Research Project, Emory School of Medicine

Role Description

*This position is open to non-REAL students*

This position would be assisting several initiatives linked to Healthcare-Associated Infection Research ongoing including those supported through the Emory Epi-Centers Research Program, Emory Antibiotic Stewardship in Long Term Care (EASIL) program. Specifically, research initiatives that will need support include entry of data submitted from participated nursing homes on antibiotic prescriptions, and potential to prepare analytic reports from these data using R. In addition, some assistance in preparing educational materials for the EASIL initiative for posting on our website. Second ongoing effort will be lead the documentation development for a large dataset on Staphylococcus aureus infections in Georgia. This dataset of about 5,000 observations requires refinement and some data cleaning with appropriate documentation for archiving the dataset and making available on the Emory DataVerse. Opportunities will exist for on-site work in long-term care facilities with enrolling nurses and performing antibody test studies for COVID-10. (e.g., communication skills, cultural competency skills). Some programmatic planning and logistics support will also be included (i.e., management skills). Student will work closely with a research assistant based out of Emory University (at Clifton Road), but currently all remote can be remote.

 

Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Handles or assists with administrative activities generally associated with the conduct of epidemiology research including: maintains database and forms pertaining to research projects, completes source documents/case report forms, and performs data entry.
  • Attends and coordinates study meetings.
  • Performs related approved responsibilities as required.

 

Qualifications

  • Some subject matter expertise in antibiotic resistance or healthcare delivery/healthcare associated infections, nursing home care, pharmacy, healthcare delivery
  • Ideally having completed or planned coursework in infectious disease epidemiology, healthcare epidemiology, or equivalent experience

Health Outcomes and Economics Research Fellowship, Thomas Jefferson University

Overview & Purpose

Thomas Jefferson University has offered industry-sponsored fellowships in health economics and outcomes research (HEOR) since 1994. The fellowships are administered through the Jefferson College of Population Health (JCPH), which is the nation’s first college of population health in the country.

The goal of the fellowship program is to prepare pharmacists and other health professionals for careers in health economics and outcomes research. One of the oldest and most established programs of its kind in the country, the JCPH fellowship program has more than 50 alumni to date. Current industry sponsors include Bristol Myers Squibb, Ethicon, Janssen, Novartis Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and Teva Pharmaceuticals.

 

General Information

  • All JCPH fellowships are 2-years long andbegin in June.
  • Fellows are assigned a JCPH faculty mentor who advises them and supervises their progress throughout the course of the fellowship.
  • Fellows usually spend the first year on the Jefferson campus in downtown Philadelphia, PA. Fellows apply the skills and knowledge gained from formal coursework to their research projects.
    • Financial support from the industry sponsor allows Fellows to complete a JCPH graduate certificate or master’s degree in Applied Health Economics & Outcomes Research, Health Policy, Population Health, Population Health Intelligence, Operational Excellence or Healthcare Quality & Safety during the duration of the fellowship.
    • Fellows work on JCPH outcomes research projects and acquire management experience. Fellows are encouraged to produce publications and make presentations based on these projects at professional meetings.
  • Fellows typically spend the second year working at the site of the industry sponsor. This provides experience in outcomes research in a corporate setting and offers opportunities to see first-hand how policies affect various stakeholders within the industry.
