APE Opportunity, Emory School of Medicine

Practicum Description

Studies have suggested that female researchers’ productivity and career progression has been impeded relative to that of male researchers as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The School of Medicine seeks a practicum student to lead data collection, data curation, and exploration of gender effects on research productivity and career progression among faculty researchers in the Woodruff Health Sciences Center. Indicators will include but are not limited to (i) the number of new grant submissions as principal investigator or multiple principal investigator (COVID and non-COVID), (ii) the number of new grant applications funded as principal investigator or multiple principal investigator (COVID and non-COVID), and (ii) the number of peer-reviewed, original research articles submitted and accepted as senior/corresponding author, as well as the impact factor associated with those articles (COVID and non-COVID). We will also gather information about the effects of the research slow-down on clinical trial accrual and the need to move to remote data gathering. In addition, we wish to analyze life stressors during this time, including laboratory/group size, dependent care responsibilities, health issues, etc.

This practicum is organized to allow students to gain research methods and data analysis skills within the constructs of gender and causality. Under the mentorship of School of Medicine faculty and staff, this practicum project may lead to publication.

 

Skills and Qualifications

  • Statistical fluency, investigative creativity, and analytical rigor.
  • Experience with data analytics tools such as MS-Excel, Redcap, SPSS, R.
  • Ability to work independently and carry out assignments based on goals and deadlines.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Practicum to start within the 2021 Spring semester. Student is expected to complete a minimum of 200-hours to produce at least 2 project deliverables.

Summer Injury Research Fellowship, IPRCE

Description

The Injury Prevention Research Center at Emory (IPRCE) Summer Injury Research Fellowship (SIRF) is a ten-week paid summer (mid-May – July) fellowship in which fellows partner closely with a community-based organization or government agency to complete a well-defined injury prevention and control project that advances public health in Georgia.  The goal of this fellowship is to reduce injury-related morbidity and mortality in Georgia, and to train the next generation of public health practitioners and scholars in injury prevention and control.

 

Eligibility 

In order to be eligible for SIRF, applicants must be full-time Masters students with a strong academic record and at least one more semester of coursework remaining before graduation at the time they complete their fellowship.  In addition, students must be able to demonstrate they have the following skills, acquired through classes, internships/fellowships, or at work:

  1. Understanding of the epidemiology of unintentional/intentional injuries, including etiology and risk and protective factors;
  2. Knowledge of the impact of injuries on health and society in terms of mortality, morbidity, disability and cost;
  3. Ability to identify and apply public health strategies and principles for the primary and secondary prevention and control of injuries.

Global Field Experience Financial Award, RSPH

Opportunity Description 

The Global Field Experience Financial Awards (GFEFA) provide supplemental funding to support Rollins student summer field experiences in low- and middle-income countries. MSPH and MPH students from all departments are eligible to submit a proposal for a GFE Financial Award and must be enrolled at Rollins for the semester prior to their field experience to qualify for an award.

To apply, students must develop and submit an application describing a project that is:

  • Well-defined, rational, and feasible
  • Integral to the student’s public health training
  • Of measurable value to the host organization/community, and
  • Based in a clearly articulated, mutually beneficial partnership

 

Site Eligibility 

Fieldwork may take place in the U.S. in person and/or virtually per CDC COVID-19 Safety Guidelines. Priority consideration will be given to applied public health fieldwork for the benefit of a population(s) in LMICs or priority populations in the U.S. as identified in by the CDC’s Office of Minority Health and Health Equity

During COVID: Unless you are a citizen of another country and can do fieldwork in that country, or you have approval from your host organization, are permitted to enter the host nation, and meet parameters from the U.S. State Department to travel, you should consider the modified U.S.-based opportunity above.

Biostatistics Online Summer Institute Scholarships, University of Washington

Description 

Scholarship applications are now being accepted for the 2021 Summer Institute in Statistical Genetics (SISG) and the Summer Institute in Statistics and Modeling in Infectious Diseases (SISMID). Like last year, the institutes will be held completely online.

The goal of the Summer Institutes is to strengthen the technical proficiency and career preparation of scholars from all backgrounds, especially those from groups historically underrepresented in STEM such as racial and ethnic minority groups, low income, first generation college students, veterans, and differently abled and 2SLGBTQ groups.

Graduate students attending a U.S. college or university are eligible to apply for SISG modules. All graduate students and postdocs are eligible for SISMID scholarships.

Teaching Assistant, BIOS 520: Clinical Trials

***This is a non-REAL Position***

Opportunity Description 

Dr. Traci Leong, course instructor of BIOS 520 “Clinical Trials, needs at least 2-3 more TAs for this course. The TAs do not need to have taken or know about clinical trials.  Due to the fact there are 80 students enrolled into BIOS 520, Dr. Leong needs more TAs to help grade assignments.  The TAs will be given an answer key in order to grade the assignments.  The TAs will not need to attend the online course. 

The TA positions are 10 hours per week and the rate of pay is listed below:

  • MPH/MSPH students – $13.50 per hour
  • 1st-2nd year PhD students – $15.00 per hour
  • 3rd year and above PhD students – $18.00 per hour

Data Analyst, Healthcare Innovation Program

Description 

Dr. Julie Gazmararian is seeking one PhD student (part-time) and one MPH REAL student to assist in a secondary data analysis examining the contributions of Social Determinants of Health to Susceptibility and Severity of COVID-19 Across the US (see proposal for details). This is a great opportunity to work with VA data on a large sample of veterans throughout the country (representing over 20 million veterans). Multiple manuscripts will be generated during this one year project. This project is also open to a potential thesis opportunity for MPH students. 

Candidates will need to have strong analysis skills/experience so they can dive into the data cleaning and analyses.

EH 530: Environmental and Occupational Epidemiology, Spring 2021 Course

Description 

Environmental and Occupational Epidemiology is a course for students in the Environmental Health Department who have successfully completed EPI 530 and BIOS 500. Students will gain experience reading, evaluating, and interpreting epidemiologic studies on the impact of both workplace and environmental exposures, and thinking through practical considerations. The course aims to strengthen each student’s ability to read epidemiological literature critically. This aim will be realized through in-depth exploration of major study designs including cross-sectional studies, cohort studies, and case-control studies, and through the weekly readings and case studies. The focus of the class is on conceptual issues common in environmental and occupational epidemiology research, the application of epidemiological concepts to environmental health topics, and on the interpretation of findings. Successful completion of the course will also contribute to a richer appreciation of how the environment affects public health.

Epidemiologist I, New York Emerging Infections Program

Job Description

Participates in surveillance and research activities pertaining to infectious diseases of public health importance as part of the New York State (NYS) Emerging Infections Program (EIP), one of 10 national, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) EIP sites. Serves as an entry-level epidemiologist responsible for carrying out a range of investigative and analytical epidemiologic activities related to the surveillance, detection, and prevention of infectious diseases. Works as a team or project member, under the direction of a Senior-level Epidemiologist, conducting routine epidemiologic functions comprising surveillance, uses clinical judgment to complete case report forms, networking with local and regional laboratories and hospitals, and data management and analysis using basic epidemiologic methods. Responds with flexibility to the changing needs of the EIP by implementing additional surveillance activities as needed.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Identifies surveillance data needs, including reviewing and analyzing all potential cases on a daily basis for inclusion in surveillance, as part of the CDC EIP in NYS. Performs medical chart review to identify specific criteria for inclusion and makes judgments on the inclusion of specific data on the care form, including but not limited to, medication administration and laboratory tests from sterile site specimens. Reports key findings from the surveillance system and supports evaluation of the surveillance system by participating in data validation. Maintains CDC databases, including compliance with CDC’s timelines for data entry, transmission, cleaning and validation.
  • Participates on internal and external committees and workgroups related to areas of expertise. Represents Rochester EIP on CDC-led Surveillance Officer (SO) and at in-person SO meetings. Maintains relationships and communication with catchment area laboratories.  Oversees all aspects of shipment of specimens from these laboratories for confirmatory testing.
  • Conducts literature reviews and assists in preparing reports from analyses of surveillance data, literature reviews and other information using behavioral science, demographic and epidemiologic analytic techniques and evaluation. Follows direction from senior scientists and integrates other perspectives. Makes oral presentations to diverse audiences, both scientific and nonscientific. Contributes to data analysis of surveillance data utilizing SAS and other programs.
  • Provides administrative leadership and technical guidance to lower-level professional, technical and administrative support staff.
  • Coordinates maintenance of project resources, the preparation of data for budget requests and financial summary reports.

 

Qualifications

Education

  • Required:  Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Epidemiology or relevant field
  • Preferred: Master’s degree in Public Health (MPH) or Master’s of Science degree in public health (MSPH) with a focus on epidemiology or analysis and assessment

Experience

  • Required:  1 year of relevant work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Preferred:  Epidemiology coursework and experience performing epidemiology work under the guidance of a senior-level epidemiologist. Experience in health research and SAS (or other analytics and data management software).

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Required:  Knowledge of health research, medical terminology and clinical concepts; knowledge of Intermediate Excel functions; strong communication, presentation and interpersonal skills; ability to work independently and collaboratively with a team; ability to travel locally to visit program partners an available to attend regional and/or national meetings when necessary.
  • Preferred:  Knowledge of SAS or other analytics and data management software

Assignment Details

Intern will be responsible for attending team meetings, department meetings, and cross-functional team meetings to gain a better understanding of the role of HEOR within the biopharmaceutical industries and at AbbVie. HEOR Interns work in a matrix organization with global cross-functional partners which further enables understanding of generating evidence that addresses global and local affiliate needs.

  • Relevant advanced course work in areas such as pharmaceutical economics, health policy, epidemiology, psychometrics, research methods or statistics.

Graduate Research Assistant, Emory Health Service Research Center

Job Description 

Students can gain experience in answering clinical research questions related to quality improvement, patient outcomes or other aspects of health services research. In this internship, students will be paired with clinical faculty throughout the Department of Surgery or Department of Medicine and assigned analytical tasks for ongoing research projects. The internship will be affiliated with the Health Services Research Center but have to the opportunity to gain exposure to multiple clinical disciplines throughout the School of Medicine.

 

Duties and Responsibilities 

Duties would include analyzing a variety of research data using statistical methods, advising on study design, statistical interpretation, data management and analysis using Microsoft Excel, SAS or R. Students may also assist research team by providing analytical support for presentations, abstract and peer-reviewed manuscripts, and grant writing or participate in patient enrollment and recruiting for clinical studies. The work environment is collaborative and is with a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, biostatisticians, and epidemiologists.
