Abstract

In art historical literature about the German Bauhaus art school it is often suggested that there are strong affinities between the schools pedagogical principles and pragmatism. However, nowhere has this claim been rigorously investigated. It remains an open question if this association is superficial or suggests an actual intellectual lineage between European modernist art and America philosophy? This paper begins to answer this question by scrutinizing the architecture of Bauhaus director Walter Gropius in light of his engagement with John Dewey.
