Overview
Affectionately known as “The Highlands,” Virginia-Highland and Poncey-Highland were named for the intersections of the popular avenues. The quirky neighborhoods, were originally developed in the early 1900s as a residential area featuring “bungalow” style homes. It has since become a cultural haven for innovative restaurants, unique shopping, and exciting bars. In 2012, Creative Loafing named Virginia-Highland the “best walkable neighborhood,” an award not to be undervalued. Old friends and new gather here for both a historical yet progressive experience.
Must-See Stuff
Virginia-Highland prides itself in its dining and nightlife, so be sure to check out the multitudes of restaurants and bars. Murphy’s and La Tavola are great options located in the heart of “the Highlands”, and Alon’s Bakery and Paolo’s Gelato are fantastic spots to satisfy a sweet tooth. It’s not all about food, though– Sugarcoat Salon is a daytime attraction, and the quirky Dark Horse is one of a handful of fun bars.
