Opportunity Description

In the Research Training Group (RTG 2624) innovative biostatistical methods for the analysis of high-dimensional data for modelling and risk assessment in toxicology are developed and applied. The three project areas are regression, prediction and integration (see picture above).

Doctoral researchers acquire knowledge in toxicology and develop statistical methods for pharmacological and environmental toxicology, optimally exploiting the flood of high-dimensional complex molecular data.

 

Qualifications 

  • A master’s degree in statistics, biostatistics or in a related field (mathematics, bioinformatics, computer science or epidemiology with significant share of statistics) with short study time and very good grades
  • Experience or strong interest in medical, biological or toxicological applications, proven, e.g., by a corresponding minor subject in the master study programme or by life- science oriented work as student or in master thesis
  • High motivation to perform and scientific interest in topics of the RTG, demonstrated in a motivation letter and in the personal communication during application process.

COVID-19 Vaccine Response Volunteer, Georgia DPH

Opportunity Description 

Atlanta – The Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) is receiving offers from medical professionals and other individuals looking for ways to help with the COVID-19 vaccination response. An effective response relies on volunteers who are pre-credentialed and organized. Georgia Responds is Georgia’s health and medical volunteer program which matches the skills and credentials of medical and nonmedical volunteers to help stop the spread of COVID-19 in Georgia.

Licensed medical volunteers including doctors, nurses, pharmacists and advanced EMS personnel (EMT Intermediate and above) may be used to administer vaccination. Nonmedical volunteers may be used in administrative roles such as registering individuals for vaccination, data input, language interpretation, other administrative areas as needed, and providing guidance and assistance at vaccination administration sites.

Research Associate, Imperial College London

Job Description

We are seeking two outstanding Research Fellows or Research Associates for the Vaccine Impact Modelling Consortium (VIMC). This major collaborative initiative directed by Professor Neil Ferguson, is based within the MRC Centre for Global Infectious Disease Analysis at Imperial College London and funded jointly by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance ($11 million over 2016-22). The MRC Centre has built upon a world-leading research group in the Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology to undertake applied collaborative work with national and international agencies in support of policy planning for emerging and endemic infectious diseases.

 

Duties and responsibilities

You will join a team of researchers who collaborate closely on the analysis of vaccine impact estimates generated across the consortium and the refinement of the methods used for impact estimation. This research includes (a) improving methods for generating ensemble estimates of disease burden and vaccine impact that fully represent uncertainties in the underlying data sources, assumptions and alternative model structures; (b) refining estimates to allow for sub-national variation in vaccine coverage and disease burden; (c) assessing the effects of socio-economic and geographic clustering of vaccine coverage across different vaccines (i.e. the effect of ‘hard-to-reach’ groups with low coverage of all vaccines); (d) assisting key country partners with the refinement, interpretation and use of VIMC outputs.

These exciting roles will also offer substantial opportunities to interact with the external modelling groups in VIMC, and to work with staff in Gavi, BMGF and other major global health bodies (notably the World Health Organization) and with public health policy-makers in low and middle-income countries.

 

Essential requirements

You must have a PhD in a relevant field; research experience of working with mathematical or statistical models; programming experience in R or similar; experience in quantitative data analysis, visualisation and interpretation; publications in leading scientific journals; experience in communicating research findings to a non-specialist audience; and an interest in infectious disease epidemiology and control.

 

Further information

We are looking to make 2 appointments, both posts are full-time on a fixed term contract until 31 March 2022. You will be based at the St Mary’s Campus, Paddington in the longer term, but working remotely in the first instance, due to COVID-19.

  • Candidates appointed as a Research Associate will be offered a salary within the range of £40,858 – £48,340 per annum.
  • Candidates appointed as a Research Fellow will be offered a salary within the range of £46,345 – £54,852 per annum.
  • Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £36,045 – £39,183 per annum.

Epidemiology Fellowship, CDC

Description

A research opportunity is currently available with the Field Research Branch, in the Division of Field Studies and Engineering (DFSE), within the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Researchers in the Field Research Branch conduct large-scale and in-depth studies examining the effects of workplace exposures on chronic health effects. Findings will contribute to protecting worker health through occupational health policies and recommendations for controlling hazards. Areas of focus in FRB include cancer, cardiovascular disease, reproductive health, and health inequity.

The appointment is full-time at CDC at a facility located in Cincinnati, OH.  Because of COVID-19 travel and facility restrictions, initially the position will require telework.  Mentors will work with participants to arrange an initial in-person visit to the nearest CDC location to receive teleworking equipment. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities 

The selected participant will work with the FRB epidemiology team on current research studies.  Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant may be involved in the following activities:

  • Conduct literature searches of published and grey scientific literature
  • Conduct quality assurance reviews of summaries on emerging COVID-19 literature, including checking for 1) completeness; 2) updating citations; and 3) verifying abstracted data summaries are accurate
  • Conduct statistical analyses and write scientific manuscripts using data from a study of healthcare workers exposure to COVID-19. Research areas include PPE use and availability, mental health, and knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with COVID-19 prevention.
  • Contribute to the development of educational and other communication materials used by principal investigators to communicate research findings

The appointment will offer the opportunity for multidisciplinary collaboration with epidemiologists, industrial hygienists, statisticians, and experts in information technology.

 

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have received a master’s or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields within five years of the appointment start date, or be currently pursuing the degree.

 

Preferred skills

  • Experience in epidemiological methods and statistics
  • Knowledge of SAS (or R) statistical software desirable

COVID-19 Surveyor, Georgia DPH

Job Description 

The Georgia Department of Public Health is looking for a current MPH student or a recent MPH graduate to provide epidemiological support to the Occupational Health (OH) Surveillance Program.
 
 This position is crucial for the implementation of a statewide Work-related COVID-19 Call-back Survey. The intern will call and interview confirmed cases of COVID-19 who worked in a non-healthcare setting during the time they likely became infected. Data collected from interviews will be entered into an electronic survey tool and spreadsheet. Results from the interviews will be used to help characterize occupational risk of COVID-19 among workers in non-health care settings and to make recommendations to better protect workers. The intern will interview cases according to established protocols and are required to follow all scripts, policies, and procedures provided by DPH, and comply with DPH training regarding confidential information related to personal information.  

The intern will be working remotely for approximately 10-15 hours per week for up to 10 weeks duration. The pay will be $15/hour ($1,500 total). The schedule is flexible. Weekends or other nontraditional hours may be required. 

 

Qualifications 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and one year of work related experience OR
  • Student seeking Master in Public Health or related degree from an accredited degree program 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Student with MPH concentration in epidemiology or occupational/environmental health Ability to speak, read, and write English

With the goal of bringing together current & future leaders in the world of global surgery, we are pleased to announce the inaugural launch of the Emory Global Perioperative Health Alliance’s Spring Symposium.

This event will represent voices from a variety of fields, including but not limited to different surgical specialties, nursing, anesthesia, obstetrics and gynecology, public health, and clinical research. Breakout panels will cover topics such as trauma, maternal health, oncology, care in low resource settings, and careers.

Students of all levels are also invited to submit abstracts for a judged virtual poster session. Categories for submissions include research, education, case-based, and out-of-the-box. Posters or talks previously presented at a national or regional meeting are admissible. For abstract submission, please complete the following interest form. Submission deadline is January 18.

COVID-19 Vaccines are a Global Public Good: Op-ed by Two Emory EPI PhD Students

Description

Even over winter break, Emory EPI students continue to devote their time and energy to finding unique ways to address the pressing public health concerns of today. First year PhD students Christina Chandra and Aniruddha Deshpande recently co-wrote an opinion piece for the AJC about COVID-19 vaccine distribution, which was published on December 31st, 2020. They argue that COVID-19 vaccines are a global public good and that our representatives can help ensure global access to vaccines, especially in low- and middle-income countries.

Injury Prevention Fellowship, CDC

Description 

A research opportunity is available with the Division of Injury Prevention (DIP), within the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

Falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries in people aged 65 and older and they can lead to significant medical costs, injuries, functional decline, and reduced quality of life. As evidenced by a recent CDC report, more than one in four older adults in the United States reported falling, totaling nearly 36 million falls in 2018. More than eight million of these falls require emergency department care. Further, about 32,000 older Americans who die as a result of these falls. Falls and fall injuries are increasing the U.S. and associated annual medical expenses are about $50 billion. These costs will only continue to surge given the aging of the U.S. population. The participant will collaborate with a team to support DIPs effort to help older adults age without injury. Specifically, the participant will support efforts to enhance surveillance, research, and program implementation related to the review and management of modifiable fall risk factors. Specifically, the participant may be involved with the Safety Promotion team on the following tasks:

  • Participate with the Team in developing a business case for evidence-based clinical fall prevention activities.
  • Analyze data and evaluate strategies to reduce hospital readmissions due to falls.
  • Provide technical support for health system implementation, use, and evaluation of falls prevention activities.
  • Pursue opportunities to educate and incentivize clinicians and health systems for integrating fall prevention.
  • Participate in analyzing, interpreting, and publishing a report on fatal and non-fatal injury data to estimate the overall health and economic impact of falls and other injuries.
  • Review and report on the health and economic burden related to unintentional injuries that impact adults as they age. As well as describe the availability of evidence-based interventions. 

 

Qualifications 

The qualified candidate should have received a master’s or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing one of the degrees and will reach completion by the appointment start date. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
