Adopt-a-Scholar Program Scholarship for First Years

Description

The Adopt-a-Scholar Program provides financial assistance to outstanding RSPH students who demonstrate exemplary leadership, community service involvement, academic success, and commitment to a career in public health. Below are the Adopt-a-Scholar Program Scholarships that are available:

  • Dr. Edgar Simard Scholar ($2500 Award):Preference for this award will be given to an outstanding student in Epidemiology.
  • Hardman Family Scholar ($2500 Award):Preference for this award will be given to an outstanding student passionate about working on environmental issues, with a focus on climate and health.
  • Mitchell Family Scholar ($2500 Award):Preference for this award will be given to an outstanding student who has a special interest in childhood food allergies, nutrition, or food insecurity.

 

Eligibility 

  • Applicants for the Adopt-a-Scholar Program must be current MPH/MSPH students with a 3.5 GPA or higher.
  • Selected students will receive a scholarship to be applied towards their tuition.

APE Opportunity, Emory Outbreak Response Team

Description 

This Emory Outbreak Response Team, which is part of the Emory COVID Response Collaborative (ECRC) and led by Dr. Jodie Guest, provides COVID-19 resources to communities in Georgia that are disproportionally affected by the pandemic. In the past, the ORT’s work has ranged from organizing and running COVID-19 testing events to delivering masks to students through a school meal delivery program.

This work is highly collaborative and dynamic. We are therefore seeking students who are flexible, professional, and comfortable working with a range of community partners and participants.



Qualifications

  • Applicant must be a 1st-year student in the 2-year MPH/MSPH program
  • Applicant must be a student in the Epidemiology Department

 

Basic Position Description

  • Participate in COVID-19 testing events
  • Provide COVID-19 public health guidance and resources to Georgia communities
  • Engage in weekly meetings with ORT members and faculty
  • Conduct COVID-19 and ORT data surveillance and monitoring
  • Participate or lead in projects related to ORT as the needs arise

 

Time Commitment

  • During the spring semester, we anticipate there will be at least 2 COVID-19 testing events occurring in March and April, each requiring 8 hours of work.
  • Weekly meetings require on average 1-2 hours per week.
  • Non-testing event work varies as projects arise and work is necessary to complete.
  • During the summer, there will be an increase in demand for participation that requires at least 24 hours per week.

Epidemiology and Information Science Fellowship, CDC

Description 

A fellowship opportunity is available within the Influenza Division (ID) Epidemiology and Prevention Branch of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia. ID provides the scientific and programmatic foundation and leadership for the diagnosis, prevention, and control of influenza domestically and internationally.

The Applied Research and Modeling (ARM) Team, Epidemiology and Prevention Branch, Influenza Division, at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is seeking a motivated masters level graduate with a background in epidemiology, biostatistics, or data science. This position will offer a unique opportunity to train with a multi-disciplinary team focusing on innovative ways to gather, analyze, and disseminate public health information. 

The ARM team supports surveillance and research platforms that supplement our understanding of influenza disease burden and severity through data analysis and mathematical modeling. The Team is particularly interested in exploring the potential utility of new and under-used data sources that could allow for better or timelier understanding of the epidemiology and burden of influenza.

Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will train with researchers on the team on the analysis and visualization of various information sources. The participant will primarily be involved in projects that include: assisting with analysis of various surveillance data sources and special studies in the Branch and use of that data to make routine estimates of influenza disease burden. The participant will also develop an understanding of how analytics and modeling support the response to seasonal and pandemic influenza.  

 

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have received a master’s degree in one of the relevant fields (Computer, Information, and Data Sciences; Life Health and Medical Sciences; or Mathematics and Statistics). Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

Preferred skills

  • Coursework or experience with data importation, manipulation, and analysis
  • Experience with SAS and R

Teaching Assistant, Health PREP

Program Overview 

Health Professions Readiness Education Program (HealthPREP) at Emory is an 8-week summer program (May 31- July 23, 2021) facilitated by Emory School of Medicine (SOM) in partnership with the Rollins School of Public Health. HealthPREP provides resources to undergraduate and graduate scholars from disadvantaged backgrounds who are interested in health-related graduate and professional schools to enhance skills for competitive admissions.

 

Job Summary

HealthPREP is looking to hire five (5) RSPH graduate students from different departments to serve as teaching assistants (TAs) and mentors who will develop and deliver a public health curriculum to HealthPREP learners. The primary responsibilities involve instructional engagement and mentorship. HealthPREP TAs are expected to foster a supportive learning environment in which students are encouraged to increase their fund of knowledge and learn to exhibit behaviors expected of future healthcare and/or other professionals. HealthPREP TAs will receive a stipend award to cover approximately 10-15hrs per week beginning in mid-February through end of July.

 

General Position Responsibilities

  • Develop, instruct, and lead specialized educational and research activities with HealthPREP learners
  • Provide coaching, mentoring, and leadership to HealthPREP learners
  • Ensure curriculum activities are effectively implemented
  • Demonstrate professionalism through preparedness, dress, and communication
  • Interact with HealthPREP learners to facilitate a collaborative, positive, and engaging environment

 

Specific Duties/Responsibilities

  • Required work hours: Curriculum development will occur from mid-February – May 1st. Revisions and edits will occur during May. Curriculum implementation will occur from May 31 – July 23, 2021 on Mondays and Wednesdays, 8am – 12pm.
  • Before the program begins, from March 22 to April 9, HealthPREP TAs will have the opportunity to work alongside the HealthPREP Program Manager at the School of Medicine to interview applicants and select the 25 HealthPREP learners.
  • Record HealthPREP learner attendance during each session
  • Additional responsibilities and work hours as assigned

 

Qualifications

  • Prior experience working with historically underrepresented, minoritized populations or organizations (through research, work experience, or other internships). Qualified students from historically underrepresented and/or minoritized groups in health-related graduate and professional schools are highly encouraged to apply.
  • Track record of teaching, training, curriculum development, and other classroom activities is preferred
  • Ability to commit to work through end of July 2021
  • Demonstrated academic success
  • Exceptional leadership skills and ability to work effectively in a team
  • Self-discipline, high professional and ethical standards
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Proficiency in communication and interpersonal skills

Public Health Program Associate, Emory COVID Response Collaborative Fellowship

Opportunity Description

The Rollins School of Public Health Covid-19 Epidemiology Fellows Program is designed for recent Master of Public Health (MPH) graduates in epidemiology or a related concentration who are interested in the epidemiologic response to the Covid-19 pandemic and its effects in Georgia.

Coordinated through the Emory Covid-19 Response Collaborative at the Emory Rollins School of Public Health and offered in collaboration with the Georgia Department of Public Health, this two-year service and training fellowship aims to bolster Georgia’s epidemiologic capacity.

 

 

Position Description

  • Each fellow will be assigned to serve as an epidemiologist within one of Georgia’s 18 health districts or to the Georgia Department of Public Health.
  • While fellows’ primary day-to-day responsibilities will be assigned by their site supervisors, fellows will be given additional support and training by fellowship program staff in topics such as managerial techniques, epidemiologic resources and career development.
  • Fellows can expect about 90% of their effort to be devoted to hands-on applied epidemiology as assigned by their site supervisors and about 10% effort devoted to engaging in activities provided by the fellowship program through continuing education training, management training, seminar/speaker series, and e-learning.
  • The long-term goal of the fellowship program is to cultivate talented epidemiologists well-equipped to address the current Covid-19 crisis and eager to apply their knowledge, creativity and passion to a career in epidemiology that extends beyond Covid-19.
  • While fellows will be employees of Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health for the duration of their fellowship, fellows will spend their time working as a level 1 epidemiologist within one of Georgia’s 18 health districts or within the state health department located in Atlanta. 

 

Qualifications 

Minimum

  • A master’s degree in public health, a master’s of science degree in public health or health education, or a master’s in development practice from an accredited school.

Preferred 

  • Master’s of Public Health graduates of accredited schools or programs of public health in Georgia and the Southeast are encouraged to apply.
  • MPH with a concentration in Epidemiology
  • Closely supervised work experience demonstrating competence in conducting public health surveillance, analyzing surveillance data, reporting analytic results, and conducting outbreak investigations.

APE Opportunity, Emory School of Medicine

Practicum Description

Studies have suggested that female researchers’ productivity and career progression has been impeded relative to that of male researchers as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The School of Medicine seeks a practicum student to lead data collection, data curation, and exploration of gender effects on research productivity and career progression among faculty researchers in the Woodruff Health Sciences Center. Indicators will include but are not limited to (i) the number of new grant submissions as principal investigator or multiple principal investigator (COVID and non-COVID), (ii) the number of new grant applications funded as principal investigator or multiple principal investigator (COVID and non-COVID), and (ii) the number of peer-reviewed, original research articles submitted and accepted as senior/corresponding author, as well as the impact factor associated with those articles (COVID and non-COVID). We will also gather information about the effects of the research slow-down on clinical trial accrual and the need to move to remote data gathering. In addition, we wish to analyze life stressors during this time, including laboratory/group size, dependent care responsibilities, health issues, etc.

This practicum is organized to allow students to gain research methods and data analysis skills within the constructs of gender and causality. Under the mentorship of School of Medicine faculty and staff, this practicum project may lead to publication.

 

Skills and Qualifications

  • Statistical fluency, investigative creativity, and analytical rigor.
  • Experience with data analytics tools such as MS-Excel, Redcap, SPSS, R.
  • Ability to work independently and carry out assignments based on goals and deadlines.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Practicum to start within the 2021 Spring semester. Student is expected to complete a minimum of 200-hours to produce at least 2 project deliverables.

Summer Injury Research Fellowship, IPRCE

Description

The Injury Prevention Research Center at Emory (IPRCE) Summer Injury Research Fellowship (SIRF) is a ten-week paid summer (mid-May – July) fellowship in which fellows partner closely with a community-based organization or government agency to complete a well-defined injury prevention and control project that advances public health in Georgia.  The goal of this fellowship is to reduce injury-related morbidity and mortality in Georgia, and to train the next generation of public health practitioners and scholars in injury prevention and control.

 

Eligibility 

In order to be eligible for SIRF, applicants must be full-time Masters students with a strong academic record and at least one more semester of coursework remaining before graduation at the time they complete their fellowship.  In addition, students must be able to demonstrate they have the following skills, acquired through classes, internships/fellowships, or at work:

  1. Understanding of the epidemiology of unintentional/intentional injuries, including etiology and risk and protective factors;
  2. Knowledge of the impact of injuries on health and society in terms of mortality, morbidity, disability and cost;
  3. Ability to identify and apply public health strategies and principles for the primary and secondary prevention and control of injuries.

Global Field Experience Financial Award, RSPH

Opportunity Description 

The Global Field Experience Financial Awards (GFEFA) provide supplemental funding to support Rollins student summer field experiences in low- and middle-income countries. MSPH and MPH students from all departments are eligible to submit a proposal for a GFE Financial Award and must be enrolled at Rollins for the semester prior to their field experience to qualify for an award.

To apply, students must develop and submit an application describing a project that is:

  • Well-defined, rational, and feasible
  • Integral to the student’s public health training
  • Of measurable value to the host organization/community, and
  • Based in a clearly articulated, mutually beneficial partnership

 

Site Eligibility 

Fieldwork may take place in the U.S. in person and/or virtually per CDC COVID-19 Safety Guidelines. Priority consideration will be given to applied public health fieldwork for the benefit of a population(s) in LMICs or priority populations in the U.S. as identified in by the CDC’s Office of Minority Health and Health Equity

Biostatistics Online Summer Institute Scholarships, University of Washington

Description 

Scholarship applications are now being accepted for the 2021 Summer Institute in Statistical Genetics (SISG) and the Summer Institute in Statistics and Modeling in Infectious Diseases (SISMID). Like last year, the institutes will be held completely online.

The goal of the Summer Institutes is to strengthen the technical proficiency and career preparation of scholars from all backgrounds, especially those from groups historically underrepresented in STEM such as racial and ethnic minority groups, low income, first generation college students, veterans, and differently abled and 2SLGBTQ groups.

Graduate students attending a U.S. college or university are eligible to apply for SISG modules. All graduate students and postdocs are eligible for SISMID scholarships.

Teaching Assistant, BIOS 520: Clinical Trials

Opportunity Description 

Dr. Traci Leong, course instructor of BIOS 520 “Clinical Trials, needs at least 2-3 more TAs for this course. The TAs do not need to have taken or know about clinical trials.  Due to the fact there are 80 students enrolled into BIOS 520, Dr. Leong needs more TAs to help grade assignments.  The TAs will be given an answer key in order to grade the assignments.  The TAs will not need to attend the online course. 

The TA positions are 10 hours per week and the rate of pay is listed below:

  • MPH/MSPH students – $13.50 per hour
  • 1st-2nd year PhD students – $15.00 per hour
  • 3rd year and above PhD students – $18.00 per hour
