Summer 2021 TEPHINET Communications Intern, Task Force for Global Health

Role Description 

The Communications Intern will provide support to the communications activities related to the conference as well as to other TEPHINET programmatic communications activities during the summer 2021 semester. Under the guidance of the Communications Manager, the intern will support the development of program and event websites, newsletters and reports; assist in the creation of communications materials for conferences and events; collect and categorize public health resources and project information for sharing via communications channels; and perform administrative and other duties as assigned. The intern may have the opportunity to contribute to specific projects depending on skills and interest.

 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development of web copy and publications
  • Assist in collecting information (through surveys, web research, and file searches) for inclusion in various communications materials
  • Update and maintain databases of communications assets
  • Assist in creating communications materials for TEPHINET conferences
  • Provide support in graphics, photography and video production if candidate has these skills
  • Copyedit documents written by native and non-native English speakers
  • Perform other duties as assigned

 

Logistical Information 

  • Time frame: The ideal candidate could commit to working from May 10, 2021 through the end of the summer semester, with a possibility of extension into the fall 2021 semester.
  • Availability: The candidate should be available for at least 20 hours per week.
  • Location: The Task Force for Global Health is working remotely until at least June 30, 2021. This position will work remotely until then and possibly further into the year depending on the Task Force’s decision around reopening.

 

Qualifications

  • Interest in working in global or public health and/or international development

American Public Health Statistics 2021 Student Competition

Opportunity Description 

The APHS Section is accepting abstract submissions for student research poster and oral presentation sessions. Students wishing to be considered for these sessions should submit online an abstract and a 2-page summary of their paper. In order to be eligible for the student competition you must be a student at the conference in October 2020 (those graduating in May/June 2020 are not eligible). When submitting your abstract, please submit it under the session “Student oral presentations” or “Student poster presentations”, even if it may be thematically related to other topics on the topic list.

The Department of Epidemiology is seeking a motivated 1st year MPH or MSPH student to manage The Confounder  (WordPress) and its corresponding weekly Mailchimp newsletter (The Weekly Confounder) – representing the voice and brand of the Department.

The position will require the student to format and post content on the Confounder site as they are emailed to them and collated throughout the week. The associate will schedule weekly emails to be sent to the department and alumni, and work with the rest of the Epidemiology communications team to fulfill the mission and strategic goals of the department. This task may include independent search and identification of relevant content for the Confounder – including, but not limited to, events, jobs, and human-interest content from outside sources.

A successful candidate would be able to identify, troubleshoot, and report technical issues with WordPress and Mailchimp to the appropriate team members as needed. This role may require communication with alumni and faculty via email for job postings and events. Other job duties may include recruiting individuals for #WeAreEmoryEPI highlights, writing occasional articles, assisting with website redesign/updates, and collaborating with the communications team to generate creative solutions to execute the Department’s communications goals.  

Requirements: 

  • 1st year student in Epidemiology MPH/MSPH program
  • Strong writing/editing skills and attention to detail are a must
  • Experience with WordPress, Mailchimp, HTML, CSS preferred
  • Responsive to email, collaborative and proactive mentality, with energy and enthusiasm for their work

Research Assistant, Emory School of Medicine

Position Description 

Emory Department of Family and Preventive Medicine seeks a Masters or Doctoral trainee candidate who will assist in recruitment and data analyses of pilot clinical trials and larger longitudinal databases. The research questions are focused on looking at behavioral risk factors and interventions for cardiovascular diseases and dementia prevention. The research efforts are vital to improving patient care, public health, and reduce health disparities. This position is a one year assignment with a possible extension for another year. It requires a minimum commitment of 15-20 hours per week. Motivated candidates will have opportunities to participate in abstract writing, presentation at scientific conferences, and co-authoring publications.

 

Qualifications 

  • Knowledge of statistical programs (e.g. SAS) and prior experience in data analyses is required
  • Prior experience in scientific manuscript writing will be helpful to participate in publications
  • Good communication skills to help advertise studies and enroll and follow-up study participants

Summer Internship, DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office

Internship Requirements

APE Opportunity, Emory Outbreak Response Team

Description 

This Emory Outbreak Response Team, which is part of the Emory COVID Response Collaborative (ECRC) and led by Dr. Jodie Guest, provides COVID-19 resources to communities in Georgia that are disproportionally affected by the pandemic. In the past, the ORT’s work has ranged from organizing and running COVID-19 testing events to delivering masks to students through a school meal delivery program.

This work is highly collaborative and dynamic. We are therefore seeking students who are flexible, professional, and comfortable working with a range of community partners and participants.



Qualifications

  • Applicant must be a 1st-year student in the 2-year MPH/MSPH program
  • Applicant must be a student in the Epidemiology Department

 

Basic Position Description

  • Participate in COVID-19 testing events
  • Provide COVID-19 public health guidance and resources to Georgia communities
  • Engage in weekly meetings with ORT members and faculty
  • Conduct COVID-19 and ORT data surveillance and monitoring
  • Participate or lead in projects related to ORT as the needs arise

 

Time Commitment

  • During the spring semester, we anticipate there will be at least 2 COVID-19 testing events occurring in March and April, each requiring 8 hours of work.
  • Weekly meetings require on average 1-2 hours per week.
  • Non-testing event work varies as projects arise and work is necessary to complete.
  • During the summer, there will be an increase in demand for participation that requires at least 24 hours per week.

Epidemiology and Information Science Fellowship, CDC

Description 

A fellowship opportunity is available within the Influenza Division (ID) Epidemiology and Prevention Branch of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia. ID provides the scientific and programmatic foundation and leadership for the diagnosis, prevention, and control of influenza domestically and internationally.

The Applied Research and Modeling (ARM) Team, Epidemiology and Prevention Branch, Influenza Division, at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is seeking a motivated masters level graduate with a background in epidemiology, biostatistics, or data science. This position will offer a unique opportunity to train with a multi-disciplinary team focusing on innovative ways to gather, analyze, and disseminate public health information. 

The ARM team supports surveillance and research platforms that supplement our understanding of influenza disease burden and severity through data analysis and mathematical modeling. The Team is particularly interested in exploring the potential utility of new and under-used data sources that could allow for better or timelier understanding of the epidemiology and burden of influenza.

Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will train with researchers on the team on the analysis and visualization of various information sources. The participant will primarily be involved in projects that include: assisting with analysis of various surveillance data sources and special studies in the Branch and use of that data to make routine estimates of influenza disease burden. The participant will also develop an understanding of how analytics and modeling support the response to seasonal and pandemic influenza.  

 

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have received a master’s degree in one of the relevant fields (Computer, Information, and Data Sciences; Life Health and Medical Sciences; or Mathematics and Statistics). Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

Teaching Assistant, Health PREP

Program Overview 

Health Professions Readiness Education Program (HealthPREP) at Emory is an 8-week summer program (May 31- July 23, 2021) facilitated by Emory School of Medicine (SOM) in partnership with the Rollins School of Public Health. HealthPREP provides resources to undergraduate and graduate scholars from disadvantaged backgrounds who are interested in health-related graduate and professional schools to enhance skills for competitive admissions.

 

Job Summary

HealthPREP is looking to hire five (5) RSPH graduate students from different departments to serve as teaching assistants (TAs) and mentors who will develop and deliver a public health curriculum to HealthPREP learners. The primary responsibilities involve instructional engagement and mentorship. HealthPREP TAs are expected to foster a supportive learning environment in which students are encouraged to increase their fund of knowledge and learn to exhibit behaviors expected of future healthcare and/or other professionals. HealthPREP TAs will receive a stipend award to cover approximately 10-15hrs per week beginning in mid-February through end of July.

 

General Position Responsibilities

  • Develop, instruct, and lead specialized educational and research activities with HealthPREP learners
  • Provide coaching, mentoring, and leadership to HealthPREP learners
  • Ensure curriculum activities are effectively implemented
  • Demonstrate professionalism through preparedness, dress, and communication
  • Interact with HealthPREP learners to facilitate a collaborative, positive, and engaging environment

 

Specific Duties/Responsibilities

  • Required work hours: Curriculum development will occur from mid-February – May 1st. Revisions and edits will occur during May. Curriculum implementation will occur from May 31 – July 23, 2021 on Mondays and Wednesdays, 8am – 12pm.
  • Before the program begins, from March 22 to April 9, HealthPREP TAs will have the opportunity to work alongside the HealthPREP Program Manager at the School of Medicine to interview applicants and select the 25 HealthPREP learners.
  • Record HealthPREP learner attendance during each session
  • Additional responsibilities and work hours as assigned

 

Qualifications

  • Prior experience working with historically underrepresented, minoritized populations or organizations (through research, work experience, or other internships). Qualified students from historically underrepresented and/or minoritized groups in health-related graduate and professional schools are highly encouraged to apply.

Public Health Program Associate, Emory COVID Response Collaborative Fellowship

Opportunity Description

The Rollins School of Public Health Covid-19 Epidemiology Fellows Program is designed for recent Master of Public Health (MPH) graduates in epidemiology or a related concentration who are interested in the epidemiologic response to the Covid-19 pandemic and its effects in Georgia.

Coordinated through the Emory Covid-19 Response Collaborative at the Emory Rollins School of Public Health and offered in collaboration with the Georgia Department of Public Health, this two-year service and training fellowship aims to bolster Georgia’s epidemiologic capacity.

Position Description

  • Each fellow will be assigned to serve as an epidemiologist within one of Georgia’s 18 health districts or to the Georgia Department of Public Health.
  • While fellows’ primary day-to-day responsibilities will be assigned by their site supervisors, fellows will be given additional support and training by fellowship program staff in topics such as managerial techniques, epidemiologic resources and career development.
  • Fellows can expect about 90% of their effort to be devoted to hands-on applied epidemiology as assigned by their site supervisors and about 10% effort devoted to engaging in activities provided by the fellowship program through continuing education training, management training, seminar/speaker series, and e-learning.
  • The long-term goal of the fellowship program is to cultivate talented epidemiologists well-equipped to address the current Covid-19 crisis and eager to apply their knowledge, creativity and passion to a career in epidemiology that extends beyond Covid-19.
  • While fellows will be employees of Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health for the duration of their fellowship, fellows will spend their time working as a level 1 epidemiologist within one of Georgia’s 18 health districts or within the state health department located in Atlanta. 

 

Qualifications 

Minimum

  • A master’s degree in public health, a master’s of science degree in public health or health education, or a master’s in development practice from an accredited school.

Preferred 

  • Master’s of Public Health graduates of accredited schools or programs of public health in Georgia and the Southeast are encouraged to apply.
  • MPH with a concentration in Epidemiology
  • Closely supervised work experience demonstrating competence in conducting public health surveillance, analyzing surveillance data, reporting analytic results, and conducting outbreak investigations.
