Graduate Research Assistant for National COVID-19 Survey, RSPH

Role Description

The Hubert Department of Global Health at Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health is looking to recruit two Graduate Research Assistants to perform data management, cleaning, and analyses for a national-level of COVID-19 related beliefs, practices, and attitudes under the direction of Dr. Robert Bednarczyk, Assistant Professor of Global Health and Epidemiology. This is a paid REAL position from August 2020 – May 2021. The position will require approximately 10-15 hours commitment per week.

Desired Skills 

  • Applicants must demonstrate an ability to work independently as well as part of a team; strong attention to detail; effectively manage project timelines and deliverables; handle confidential study information in compliance with regulatory and institutional guidelines; and excellent analytical and writing skills.
  • A working knowledge of statistical programs (e.g., SAS, SPSS, and/or R) to analyze and report data is required.

Research Assistant for Qualitative Project, BSHE Department

Opportunity Description

We are looking for two MPH-level students to conduct qualitative analyses on a project examining refugee women’s access to and experience of using sexual and reproductive health services in metropolitan Atlanta. The students will be responsible for creating summative memos and coding 27 interview transcripts using MAXQDA. We expect that this work will take approximately 20 hours per student. Prior coursework in and experience with qualitative analyses is required.

Graduate Assistant, Region IV Public Health Training Center / RSPH

Description 

The Region-IV Public Health Training Center (R-IV PHTC), funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), has an opening for a graduate assistant. The mission of the R-IV PHTC is to be a learning community that will strengthen the current and future public health workforce, expose public health students to the value of working in underserved areas, and advocate for public health systems and policies. While the R-IV PHTC offers student field placements with other agencies, this position would be working as a graduate assistant with the R-IV PHTC team at the Emory RSPH.

Responsibilities

The selected graduate assistant will be responsible for data entry and processing and will assist the R-IV PHTC team (including staff working on training, needs assessments, field placements, communications and evaluation) with the management of the R-IV PHTC’s program.

Specific tasks may include, but are not limited to, assisting various members of the Central Office team with:

  • Data collection and management
  • Preparation and implementation of in-person and online trainings
  • Summary reports of training and field placement evaluations
  • Communications efforts such as newsletter, websites, social media, or e-blasts
  • Training needs assessment activities, including environmental scans of training needs and resources
  • Analysis of state-wide needs assessment data and workforce development plans

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be an MPH student willing to start the position in summer and continue through the 2020-2021 academic year. Candidates should have excellent organizational and communication skills, including both oral and written skills. Candidates must also have excellent computer skills, specifically in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Google Apps. Experience with Mail Chimp, Survey Monkey, WordPress and Cvent would also be helpful.

  • Salary Level: 13.50 per hour
  • Approximate Hours per Week: 15-20
  • Note: The R-IV Public Health Training Center is a federally-funded program which has a citizenship requirement. Quantitative Analysis of Clinical Research Data, Fall Course Offering

Description

This course focuses on practical application of statistics addressing clinical research questions. Analyzing data is the major emphasis of the course including examining if assumptions of the statistical analyses are being met and interpreting the findings. Course assignments and a final project focus on using statistical software and computing resources to analyze data sets from actual clinical research studies and literature with interpretation and assessment of conclusions.

Humphrey Fellowship Program Assistant, RSPH

Position Description

Provides administrative support to the Hubert Humphrey Fellowship staff and fellows. Responsible for supporting event and program planning, data collection and analysis, stakeholder communication, and maintaining program materials.

Essential Duties

  • Coordinates weekly Monday morning seminars by serving as a liaison between professional facilitators and organizations, program staff and fellows.
  • Produces associated Hubert Humphrey Fellowship Program media including but not limited to annual and weekly newsletters, weekly social media posts, annual brochure, etc.
  • Facilitates connections and collaborations with public health organizations in the U.S. including the CDC and PAHO/WHO.
  • Co-organizes spring workshop focused on global development and social justice for all Humphrey Fellows from all campuses.
  • Co-organizes other periodic events including volunteer activities, Faculty Advisor Luncheon, Noon Time Seminars, and the Closing Ceremony.
  • Coordinates evaluation of programs, seminars, and fellow/host family/adviser experience
  • Provides other administrative or programmatic support as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge and skills of Microsoft Office including Word, Excel and Publisher.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program’s components and applicable International Institute for Education (IIE) policies.
  • International experience(s)
  • Experience working with mid-career professionals from various countries and cultures around the world

Public Health Informatics Fellowship, CDC

Role Description

The Public Health Informatics Fellowship Program (PHIFP) provides on-the-job training for professionals to apply expertise in information science, computer science, and information technology to address current and future informatics needs. While working in CDC programs to enhance our agency’s informatics workforce, fellows help state and local health departments and international public health agencies solve complex public health informatics challenges.

Public health informatics is the systematic application of knowledge about systems that capture, manage, analyze and use information to improve population health. The Public Health Informatics Fellowship Program (PHIFP) provides applied public health informatics training to fellows to apply computer science and information technology to public health problems.

PHIFP is a 2-year, competency-based training program in public health informatics. Fellows are placed in assignments in centers and offices across CDC where they gain experiential training to enhance the agency’s informatics workforce.

Responsibilities and Tasks

The following list includes routine tasks for PHIFP fellows:

  • Working with teams involved in research and development of public health information systems.
  • Conducting informatics evaluations on complex public health information systems.
  • Contributing to CDC’s emergency response activities.
  • Providing technical assistance to state and local health departments and international public health agencies through short-term assignments, or Info-Aids.

Online Contact Tracing Course, Johns Hopkins University

About this Course

The COVID-19 crisis has created an unprecedented need for contact tracing across the country, requiring thousands of people to learn key skills quickly. The job qualifications for contact tracing positions differ throughout the country and the world, with some new positions open to individuals with a high school diploma or equivalent.

In this introductory course, students will learn about the science of SARS-CoV-2 , including the infectious period, the clinical presentation of COVID-19, and the evidence for how SARS-CoV-2 is transmitted from person-to-person and why contact tracing can be such an effective public health intervention. Students will learn about how contact tracing is done, including how to build rapport with cases, identify their contacts, and support both cases and their contacts to stop transmission in their communities. The course will also cover several important ethical considerations around contact tracing, isolation, and quarantine. Finally, the course will identify some of the most common barriers to contact tracing efforts — along with strategies to overcome them.

Graduate Research Assistant, PRISM

Role Description

The Know@Home (K@H) study is a longitudinal randomized control trial housed within the PRISM Health research group in the Department of Epidemiology.

Know@Home is a research project taking place in 11 states across the U.S. This study is evaluating online recruitment approaches as well as health promotion strategies to support HIV testing for Black or African-American and Hispanic or Latino gay and bisexual men. As a part of the study, participants are mailed home HIV test kits. Some men who are enrolled as participants in the study will be randomized to have access to the Know@Home app. This app includes information about HIV and STI prevention, treatment, and also includes the option to order home STI testing, condoms, and lubricant for free.

Position Details and Responsibilities 

This position is eligible for REAL award. This position would start during summer 2020 but would have the option to continue through the fall and spring semesters as well. The position could be done remotely until campus re-opens.

Among possible job responsibilities of REAL students working on K@H are the following:

  • Interacting with our participant management system
  • Ensuring quality of data
  • Randomizing and enrolling study participants
  • Communicating with study participants via email, text, and phone
  • Contributing to other study retention activities

Project Summary: 

The Center for Global Safe Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (CGSW) is seeking Graduate Research Assistants (GRA) with strong data skills to support multiple existing projects:

  1. (SaniPath (http://sanipath.org/), an exposure assessment study for fecal contamination in urban, low-income settings in more than ten cities
  2. Typhoid Environmental Surveillance Study, a sewage surveillance study to monitor Typhoid circulation in the city of Kolkata, India
  3. Exposure Assessment for Cholera in Nairobi, Kenya;

Student Role:  

Under the guidance of CGSW faculty and staff, the GRA will assist with database development, data management and analysis, data visualization, and publications.

Qualifications:  

Applicants must have good knowledge of public health, statistics, and computer programming.  

Skills: intermediate skill in R is required and knowledge about ODK/mobile data collection, Rmarkdown, and R Shiny are preferred

During times of crisis, developing partnerships with stakeholders to disseminate messages is very important. Participants will learn about ways to develop these relationships for successful health communication.
