Parajanov (1924-1990) and his struggles are detailed in an award-winning book by James Steffen.

A book written by James Steffen, Film and Media Studies Librarian, has been selected as a Choice Outstanding Academic Title for 2014 by Choice, a publication that offers reviews for academic libraries, in the January 15 issue.

The book is titled The Cinema of Sergei Parajanov and details the struggles Parajanov had in making films under the oppressive Soviet government.

According to the magazine’s website, “the list of Outstanding Academic Titles were reviewed during the previous calendar year. This prestigious list reflects the best in scholarly titles reviewed by Choice and brings with it the extraordinary recognition of the academic library community.”

The list of titles are chosen from over 7,000 works reviewed in the magazine each year.

Steffen, an Emory graduate, has a love for world cinema and movie restoration. You can read a full article about his background in the Emory News.
